Howdy fellas,
More great news from my new truck purchase....the "new rear ends" ate themselves a few weeks ago. I swapped in some low mileage ones I found and pulled. Not a fun job. When I went for my test drive this morning.... "New 5k miles" transmission has obvious bearing noise in my final highway gear, the high and the low. I dropped the fluid and it didn't seem bad. No huge chunks or anything. Is this something I can pull apart and fix or do I just have to get a reman unit? I can fix about anything but I have never had to open up a transmission yet...guess I have been lucky. Thanks for any input.

There is no bearing for the final highway gear. Did you have a noise before the rear ends went out?
Sounds and vibration travel the driveline. Are you certain ride height/driveline angle are correct?
Are you certain the issue isn't in these "new" rears?

Only happens in the final gear at highway speeds. 55+, 65+ it is worse. Driveline is all new with new ujoints and carrier bearing. I lined up the yokes how they were previously. I can recheck the ride height. I don't really know how to check the other driveline angles or change them everything looks pretty close to 0 angle other than the drive shaft at the back that is meant to be at an angle to the rear differential. New rear ends were in really good shape, nice and tight and basically no metal on the plugs, I gave them new fluid as well. Truck was extremely low mileage. I obviously don't 100% know they are perfect. This noise is similar to one I was hearing previously. But I have kept thinking it was multiple things. Truck had questionable ujoints, bad carrier bearing and I guess something wrong with the rear end. Had my local shop ride along with me and he immediately thought transmission issues with how it sounds. Idk I'm at a loss.Big Road Skateboard Thanks this.

I'd pull that inspection plate if you still have the oil out. Did you try pushing the clutch all the way in at that speed? I know it's hard on the clutch brake, but it might help determine if it's actually in the tranny.

Has fresh oil in it but I can drain it to a clean bucket. That is another thing this truck the clutch needs replaced and there is no clutch brake. I went to add one but not sure the clutch could have been adjusted out far enough to contact it. What will that show me with the transmission? When I take the truck out of gear or I am not in the final gear I don't hear the noise at all and everything seems really smooth. Coasting out of gear it is fine. Coasting in gear is horrible. Under power it used to be fine but now even under power it seems not as good.

Drive line angle according to my phone is about 2 degrees at the front differential and at the carrier bearing. I didn't climb under to see what is is at the transmission but I'm assuming it is about the same. Just eyeing it the line looks pretty flat and level.

Is an RTO or an RTlO? Guessing the title is supposed to be 189-13 so rtlo?

I'm with @Big Road Skateboard on this one. If noise was not there before the rear end swap and then it showed up on the test drive immediately after then odds are its in the rears.
Was the truck towed when the rear end failed? If it was and it was towed from the front without pulling axles or driveshaft then that would likely have caused some damage to the transmission.Rideandrepair, Big Road Skateboard and Kruse Family Farms Thank this. -
