I'm so very glad and proud to be a truck owner and have my own business so that I don't have to put up with any of the company mentality crap, man this site is a real eye opener as to the reasons that the trucking industry is getting worst by the day. All one needs to do is read some of the post here to understand the different opinions and veiw points from different drivers and it becomes really clear that us coming together to do anything for the common betterment of the industry will never happen. Why any driver would feel that we need more intervention at a state or government level is beyond me. Governing all trucks at the same speed is to say the least idiotic and lacks rational thought. Wreckless, inconsiderate drivers will continue to be that way whether they are going 68mph or 75mph. The speed does'nt matter, its lack of proper training and lack of driving skills that gets people killed out here. Years ago big trucks were not cut back nowhere near the rate that they are cut back now and drivers were fine. The biggest change I've seen is in the skill level and know how of the average driver. Regardless to what speed trucks are allowed to run, bad drivers are bad drivers car or truck, fast or slow it will not change a thing. Do you see more accidents on the highways today from governed company trucks or un-governed o/o trucks? To think that governing all trucks to the same speed will cause less accidents and save lives is rediculous. The roads would be more dangerous than ever and its sad that some of you that drive everyday can't see that. I am really ashamed at what this industry is becoming, and it's really sad to see drivers welcoming more regulation and forfeiting their rights so easily.
Should DOT mandate 68mph speed limiters?

Well, "Should the Government Regulate..." pretty much gets a "No." by virtue of the question. If we follow the logic, we can quickly come to an analogous situation with Gun Control Legislation. You can't legislate "Don't be an idiot" so we aim for the tools the idiots use. turns out, there happen to be a lot of not-idiots out there using the tools just fine.

It would be interesting to view some hard proof that point to speed as the major contributing factor of accidents for commerical vehicles. However, some how I feel this evidence doesn't exist. For the most part, non professional drivers are the largest contributors to vehicular accidents. Yet the four-wheelers are getting faster and faster, and their drivers are getting more stupid and stupid! I was reading an article last week, that suggested Dodge was thinking about a remake of the '71 Charger (V8 hemi) from the movie Vanishing Point. Unbelievable!

Actually youre making the assumption there is more than one lane. Like I said I live in a hick town and these beer drunken fools will get right behind you on a two lane hwy and flash their lights. Now salutations be upon you :smt109

unless you know for a fact (and maybe you do) this seems to me to be an ASSUMPTION too!

Thank you. Many people on this site dont seem to understand the concept: majority rules.

Even though youre one of those crazy conservative types
or so your posts exagerate, I agree with most of what you said.

Youre right, it is an assumption. But its a high probability assumption. The fool part is undoubtable though

Thanks....
Well. when it's a 4-wheeler, we know that they can do better. We also know that there are people that just live to antagonize others on this planet. The thing is, when you acknowledge that you ARE antagonized, the idjits win.
Exactly....but there are some people, and I'm not one of them, that consider that lane to be theirs and theirs alone, simply because they want to travel faster than most others.
Believe me, I'd love to see some of these people get tickets. The laws are on the books, and the signs are up all over the place, but you rarely see anyone busted for lane hogging.
In my opinion, that kind of driving IS more dangerous than speeding. Lane changes are the number one factor in multiple lane roadway crashes. Speeding may lend one to changle lanes more often, and those that tie up the passing lanes contribute to more than their share of accidents as well....but why aren't they busted. I've seen traffic cops go around on the right and hammer on down, rather than to take a few minutes to write them up.
It's no wonder that some people continue to hog those lanes. They don't fear being out there.
