Got a question for experienced truckers put there.

I recently passed 1yr experience as an OTR trucker, so as you know i have barely scratched the surface of learning how to reach my potential when it comes to learning how to be good at this trade.

I keep randomly getting told that i need to get a CB radio. I have a nice CB radio mount built into the dash of my 2021 cascadia, and even a hook close to my K-Pin release button to hang the microphone, etc.

Could you "more experienced" truckers explain to me why i need a CB radio in 2026? I know next to nothing about them but im in a financial position where i can finally afford to invest in that equipment if i really need it.

My personal prospective is that a CB is a valuable tool for any OTR truckdriver. You can receive important information about weather conditions, traffic situations and just friendly talk with other drivers.

Be sure to buy a decent CB like a Cobra 29 with weather channel, have it peaked and tuned by a reputable CB tech and purchase a good antenna for best results. Learn the basic rules for CB operation and get a copy of call signs to keep legal.

I feel that you will enjoy the experience if you use the radio the proper way. Happy travels 10-4?

    Why?

you can’t get a call from the truck a mile ahead of you and have them tell you that there is a danger that you will run into,

Sorry but no peak and tune, get it aligned by a reputable service tech the right way, focus on the antenna system, the radio is a small part of the entire system and get it installed right.

That was a choice of tech terms from my days of driving back in the 60s-70s and I agree with you 100%. I also agree that a proper antenna system is the heart of any good CB system along with a good ground.

I don’t think you can get those with weather band anymore, at least I haven’t seen one in some time.

It’s one of those things where it certainly doesn’t hurt to have one, especially in one of those where it’s easy to install as opposed to a 579.

I've been in the game a long time. I haven't had a CB radio in my truck since 2018. It's nice to have but in my opinion it doesn't really bring added value to my day to day tasks. If anything, its an added distraction. I don't a trucker HAS to have one. The only thing the CB radio really does is just fit the prototype of what a trucker is. If you have greater needs, focus on those.

I've never had a radio in my truck. My trainer's antenna was damaged, and we never had his on the entire time I was with him. He said 90% of it is useless anyway, and some is downright hostile. In two years I've never missed not having one.

I haven't had a CB Radio since 2015. They look nice, but I haven't needed it tbh. I use 4 GPS's (Garmin, Rand NcNally, CoPilot and Google Map) and two of them have real-time navigational programs that offer real-time updates and alternate route suggestions when necessary. Some truckers just like to battle rap each other on the channels at night.
