I graduated CDL/Trucking school March of 2023, I've been actively looking for a job since then while sustaining myself on my current employment.

I've been trying to get trained in OTR freight for almost 4 years at this point and I keep getting told my background makes me untrainable/unhireable/not worth the risk. I was arrested in July 2021, and convicted in 22, served probation, and have completed everything and have no supervision or anything remaining. I'm 40, this is my one and only charge ever, it was possession with intent to deliver less than 2g cocaine, automatic felony.

I am not a user, and, actually never have been, I can and will pass a hair follicle exam at any point. Nobody will touch me for OTR training, at all. How do I get my foot in the ###### door in this industry? I'm many hundreds, maybe thousands of applications deep at this point, and it's starting to feel like I'm just wasting time and money and should cut my losses and move on. I made the mistake of thinking I could/should go to school as soon as I got released from jail, and get some experience before the conviction - that didn't work out, as they now have databases for that and ask if you have pending charges, and I wasn't willing to lie about it.

Long story short, felony, not a druggie, only conviction in my 40 years, how the hell do I get trained with that stink on my background? Would prefer OTR but any decent work with honest pay is in-bounds. Kept everything valid and up to date, still got med certification, still got CDL-A, but it's been years and I'm losing the last little bit of hope

All of that sounds wonderful, but I have no experience, I'm sorry if that wasn't clear, I'm looking for somebody to train me, I have the license, but not the training/experience. Also I'm based out of central Texas, but, given that it's OTR I'm sure we could bridge that gap.

Many thanks for being accepting, though

Look into other jobs or trades. Having a possession with intent to distribute conviction and looking for a job with lots of travel is like being convicted of theft & wanting to work as bank teller. EVERYONE says they are reformed but the employer is taking the risk. There are many newbies without convictions & other black marks so the employer sees no reason to accept that risk & words are just words until someone knows your behavior. They don't owe you trust until you break it. I assume you have reformed. A carrier that wants to hire you is almost certainly going to require you go through CDL Refresher course before their insurance allows them to hire a newbie with year+ of no CDL work. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR CDL REFRESHER UNTIL YOU HAVE JOB OFFER FROM TRUCKING COMPANY or you might be wasting time & money again.

Any sort of pickiness about CDL driving is going to put you in bad shape. Maybe @Chinatown has some ideas. Felons do get hired but it is a real struggle. Best part is you are working. Make sure that is steady and your behavior there is spotless.

Alternate suggestion: wait 'til 5 years from your conviction date -- & then....

    ...try applying with Schneider:

Schneider hired me....when no one else would.

A bad day at Schneider will still be better than a good day at Western Express.

    Are you Hawaiian?
We've helped new drivers find work with criminal records much worse than yours.

Apply with companies using the short app off each individual trucking company website. If there's no short app. then use the long app.

Good question! Which town are you in or near? Maybe some local stuff around there you're not aware of.

Apply, even if you don't think you'll be hired. Do that with all companies. Don't just assume you won't be hired; let the companies make that decision.
