After seven months as a JB company driver a long time ago, the last straw was when my DM gave me a bunch of flack for bobtailing over to my storage unit across the street from their South Gate yard.

Just quit a job with a smallish company called Acme Transport USA, partly because they micromanage their drivers so much. ("Do you have a key to that padlock on the trailer?" Yes it's my padlock. You think I wouldn't say something if I didn't?)

Finally thinking of buying a truck after all these years. Not good to hear that leasing with a company can lead to being micromanaged even when you own the truck. Since I'm not too concerned about making a ton of money I might end up choosing to go it on my own as an independent and just drive when I feel like it (which is pretty much all the time, so who knows, maybe I'd make OK money).

Sounds like from your post you make rash decisions. So yes why don’t you go into debt for 10s of thousands of dollars buying a truck buy your own plates another thousand, insurance which is going to be another 10 thousand and just work part time sounds like a well informed decision.I mean you didn’t even understand that when you lease a truck to a company you’re running under there authority on there insurance and didn’t understand that puts you on operating under there rules. You are literally leasing the truck to them

I wouldn't call resigning from a truck driving job "rash" but do appreciate the info. As you correctly noted, I don't know much at all about the ins and outs of owning a truck, lease vs. independent, etc.

Your question, is a loaded gun, waiting to go off, there is no such thing as “the perfect company” you’ll get company A is the best, and another will say, wrong company A sucks, best advice I can say is? Talk to as many as you can, try and get a feel for them, and choose what sounds best for you
