Square footage of NEW constructions may average 2300, median square footage is still under 1,800. Home price to income is well over 4, compared to just over 2 in 1980. Rent to income was below 20% in 1980, now it's about 30%.

The argument was made that life is always tough and our parents were able to succeed despite the difficulties. I posit that if a person today were to make the same basic financial choices as a person in 1980, the person from 1980 would experience a better result. Luxuries were expensive, basic staples were cheap - relatively.

When I graduated from college I moved to Milwaukee with a friend. We had a two bedroom apartment with a kitchen, living room, and dining room that cost $625 a month. We ate out or ordered in 2-3 times a weeks and walked around the corner to Wolski's most nights. As of 2021 that same apartment is renting for $1,675. Even if we cut out all non-essentials there is no way Chuck and I could cover that rent on our incomes, let alone save any money. "Move outside the city" you say. Okay, but then we're not making the same choices.

I'm not saying that it's not possible to be successful these days. It is, it's just harder than it was.

My post wasn't about the appropriateness of the war, or our ability to win it. It was in response to people trying to shuffle responsibility for the war and it's impact on America away from the President. Saying he was poorly advised is a cop out.

I suspect there’s a correlation as far as who in DC are in favor of the war and those who have a fairly high dollar amount on trackaipac.com As long as Israel owns our politicians we will continue to fight their battles, economy be hecked.
