I was told that at 70 cents a mile as a 1099 driver, i would be making the equivalent of 60 cents a mile as a w2 driver because of self employment tax. That maybe could be true, but what i did not know was the huge tax break from per diem. The w2 company i used to drive for offered it at a cost of 2 cpm to make 10 cpm non taxable, so really i am barely breaking even with that. But now that i am free to take per diem, it makes up for the self employment tax. As it was explained to me, a truck driver gets 80% of $80 per day written off, 271 days total for me. Do I have that correct?
I care nothing for health insurance, so 1099 pay suits me. I had not saved any receipts for 2025, but am doing so now for 2026 on the few expenses i have.
Went and talked to a tax expert, turns out as a 1099 company driver I am not spending extra in taxes

You are comparing YOUR 1099 situation to ONE W2 company’s policy.
THAT comparison could be valid — aside from the fact the vast majority of 1099 gigs are tax frauds.
Even IF you save your receipts, you’ve got a huge risk at audit time.
Anyway, a 10c difference wouldn’t come close to covering the benefits of a good w2 company(vacation, retirement, 7.15% FICA, health and disability, etc). And a good W2 company offers a better per diem option as well.Tall Mike, Thrasher28 and Long FLD Thank this. -
You’re confusing actual per diem with the Meals & Incidentals allowance.
What’s your plan if you get hurt on the job? Or if they decide to not pay you?Thrasher28 Thanks this. -
not going to knock you if you enjoy what you’re doing, but visionary/dental/disability costs most W2 drivers less than a 1099 paying just to have worker’s comp.
if you enjoy the job and the cons are worthwhile for you, then that’s awesome. But don’t less bossman convince you he’s not slightly exploiting you
