I occasionally drove an 80 something Brigadier General in the city peddling freight for CF. They rented 2 of them at the terminal I worked at. It was straight pipes and one of the loudest trucks I have driven. It was a workhorse!

what is the advantage of having FASS system?!singlescrewshaker, Rideandrepair, Banker and 1 other person Thank this.

There is a few. They remove all air from the fuel system. It can self prime the system when changing filters. If you are like me and have a davco it will run through a 20 micron water catcher and then a 2 micron filter instead of just one filter. It is probably overkill but I really like it for prolonging the injectors. I felt like it was pretty important on my N14 cause those injectors just don't last.singlescrewshaker, W923, Rideandrepair and 5 others Thank this.

Never heard of a B-model jimmy until now. Not a bad looking truck.

That thing is pretty sweet. Wouldn't want to drive it everyday. But it is nice to look at.singlescrewshaker, W923, Rideandrepair and 3 others Thank this.

I read a Cummins service bulletin that said that FASS or equivalent was the fix for the 903. My dad drove one. One day they'd dyno it and it would put 400 to the ground. The next they'd be lucky to get 150. Cummins said that was the fix.Last edited: Apr 14, 2026 at 11:08 PM

Up until '65, the 7000 was available with the V12 gas job, 2-351 V6s with a common block, allegedly good for about 275 HP. Diesels were still in their infancy, and some still wanted gas jobs. Some unusual creations to get them "over the hill", like this guy was from Janesville, Wis. and adapted a Buick V8 on the front of an IH in line 6. It supposedly worked well.

@Banker I do have a question since you know more about 12.7s. On a cold idle, like 50f and below my engine has a much more hammering sound compared to when it is warm. Is that typical for these? Or does it indicate some kind of issue?
singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
Mine really didn’t change much in sound or smoke when starting until it was below freezing. When it was single digits or below and had set overnight it sounded like it was coming apart for 30 seconds or so and looked like it was on fire. If it sounds like a sewing machine all the time you probably need to have it checked and may just need the overhead run.
Picture was a cold start in single digits, smoke cleared up in 30 seconds or so and it had just been inframed.singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
I will add running the overhead to my list. Only does it when it is cold and has sat over night. As soon as the engine has a bit of heat in it the idle is normal.singlescrewshaker and Banker Thank this.
