I don’t think he meant “cage bolt” as in caging the brakes, thinking he’s talking about the bolt that secures the two half’s of the break chambers togetherOLDSKOOLERnWV, cke, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this.

True that; It seems the above reply makes more sense,
however, it's a massively dangerous spring,
that has a potentially fatal release of kinetic energy
if the two halves separate with you working on it.
Be careful out there. -
Oh wow!! That had to make a loud noiseOLDSKOOLERnWV and cke Thank this.

I believe the nut loosened from vibration and fell off,
but the retainer ring is formed, (stamped,) around the
two Hemispherical chambers, so it would stay in place,
as bolt is fed down thru the top.
Just an observation;
would need clarification from JasperGB to what happened.
I've cut brake chambers up to recover the aluminum,
Torch a 4"x4" window in side, then cut thru spring to
relieve pressure, then cut the clamp ring in half.OLDSKOOLERnWV, cke and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -
I found some of all places in a big toolbox at the pawn shop, they sold them to me for $1 each. Carried them in my side box till I did the big rig repo on another TTR members trailer. I left them in the chambers of the thief’s truck and got the hell out of dodge. I’m sure @MACK E-6 and others remember since I tried to stay in contact with them….Last edited: Apr 15, 2026

One of my customers owns a couple scrap yards. I see those maxi’s laying around and wonder how many new guys learnt the hard way…. -
if you don't torch the spring first,
it could be fatal, like no next time.
Nice chunky nuggets of alum. tho.
