Im leased on. I break expenses down and send them to my accountant. I go over the return and find mistakes. So im wondering how hard it is to do it your self. The 1040 is easy and the schedule C is easy. But im not an expert about all the other pages I see. I pay 850 for the taxes next year it will probably be 950.

As a rule i have ATBS do my taxes. They cost a bit more but do a pretty good job so far. Then i go over them and its usually very small mistakes like a coma in the wrong place here or a single item in the wrong category. I.e one i found this year was oil diapers under the medical expenses section.

and honestly anyone who is not directly you or family with the time and motivation to check everything multiple times will make mistakes. When a third part does your taxes. Your not a person to them, your a customer, a customer in a field that have very little direct knowledge about other then what they soak up via interactions with the customer. Thats not a bad thing or to dehumanize you to them, because they will do their best. But arent motivated or knowledgeable enough to go above and beyond save in specific instances learning the every in and out of a business.

That said if you want to do your own and have issue with specific parts of your taxes. You can actully call the IRS and they will help you through everything. They have people who specialize in every individual part of the returns and will transfer you to someone who can take you through it step by step.

Further there are online classes and often even free classes you can take that do the same thing and are as good as anything i got in my accounting classes in college. Heck some of them were a direct unedited ripoff of the IRS page.

Small business online learning | Internal Revenue Service Small business online learning | Internal Revenue Service take a gander through sometime. They actully offer a lot of good advice and help avoid a ton of legal pitfalls i didnt even know existed.

I have always used an accountant, and I think its the best practice. There are a lot of things that are required, depending what state you are in. The last thing you want is, you make a mistake and get flagged for an audit

If you're already catching mistakes on what the accountant is returning, you probably know more than enough to do the Schedule C yourself. The real question is Section 179 and per diem accounting, that's where doing it wrong costs real money. TurboTax Self Employed handles most of it if you want to try DIY one year and compare against the 850. Worst case you still have last year's return as a reference.
