For me it’s a bit difficult to explain how I secured my loads, like I mentioned above, I look at weight and figure it from there, hence, I always use an extra securement pulling backwards in case if an emergency hard braking occurs(rare). For example, if my load calls for 5 chains, 3 will be pulling back with certain loads.
IH Truck Guy, mitmaks, cke and 2 others Thank this. -
Oops you are right. I totally had a brain fart over the wll being cut in half for direct securementcke, Diesel Dave and Razororange Thank this.

I know a few guys who would totally just 4 point that 40k machine. Used to work with a couple of them.
I was amazed when I went into the yard one weekend to find one of those 8x8 military transporters sitting on a step deck fresh all the way from California with 4 3/8 chains on it.Last edited: Apr 23, 2026 at 1:06 AM

A classic Catch-22, this is.

It's really not. Breaking strength is at least 3x WLL for tiedowns. If you secure to the WLL requirements you are already way higher than the breaking strength securement requirements.
Most drivers don't run into issues with this specific law because by the time you meet the aggregate WLL requirements for a load you've also covered requirements for this section of the law.Toomanybikes, Feedman, Diesel Dave and 2 others Thank this. -
The OP's question seemed to be needing an answer from the regulations but most answers were practical "here's what I do".

If it was an audiobook I still wouldn't read it.
Well, maybe if Louis L'amour wrote it.Numb and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
Most of you guys are in luck, most DOT officers are just as bad at reading and math as some of the worst truck drivers and could not explain what the regulations mean.
Speedy356, mitmaks, TripleSix and 1 other person Thank this. -
Hell, if he would’ve posted a picture of the machinery in question, we would’ve practically secured it for him legally.
