Recently hired with a company that has the inward-facing Samsara camera (in addition to outward-facing). They used to be a stopper for me, but everything else about the job looked great, so I made an exception. Outward-facing is useful, but in my opinion the inward-facing cameras are just a useless gimmick tech companies came up with to extract funds from gullible trucking companies. I ended up deciding to just completely ignore the thing. When the chime sounds and the voice says things like "Please reduce speed" "Put down phone" or "Distracted" I just keep doing whatever it is I'm doing and ignore it. If management gets on my case about it I'll ignore them too, but so far they've been cool about it and haven't said a word.

Some record audio, some don't. There is no way to block the audio of what you are saying or doing without a louder noise to mask it.
But even the outward only facing cameras might record audio, which would include what is said or done inside the truck - since the camera is mounted inside.
And the outward facing camera can, and does, record reflections off the glass.
The driver facing camera is a more direct feed, but that reflection has nailed drivers to the wall. -
We live in the wrong world to get worried about cameras. every where you go your being recorded. the number one thing that gets drivers in trouble isusing electronic devices. Personally I thing phones should have a disable function when driving.
How about stay off your phone except handsfree use when driving. -
Hands-free is no panacea. In some ways phone conversations are even more distracting than texting. One of the tip-offs that a driver is being distracted by talking on the phone is having to pass them repeatedly when you're the one who's been traveling at a constant speed the whole time.
-
Its the only legal way to talk on the phone while driving. Personally I do not use my phone while driving. if I need to make a ca;; I find a safe place to stop.mathematrucker Thanks this.

Just talking to someone else in the car is a distraction.
Watch nearly any TV show or movie when two people are talking in a car with one of them driving.
How often does the driver look over or back to the person they are talking to, often for several seconds?
Sometimes it results in a near miss or a crash of some kind.
It's a subtle detail that doesn't get talked about that much.
Handheld, Bluetooth or in person...
When you need to keep your eyes and mind on the road, conversations of any kind are a distraction.
Even if you don't look over to the person you are talking to, the process of listening to and formulating a response makes you lose focus on your driving duties to some degree.
Our minds and brains are not capable of true multi-tasking on a conscious level, they are only capable of task-switching.
Look up the difference.1999 C12, MidwestResident, Powder Joints and 1 other person Thank this. -
Acme Transport, Ltd. out of Surrey, BC has cams facing both directions. Their American division is headquartered (office only - no yard) in Ferndale, WA and called Acme Transport USA.

Reason for edit: Trimmed.Bumper Thanks this. -
When it was still Interstate Distributor Company, in 2016-2017 I ran their GP dedicated between Fontana and SLC only (we never went to Phoenix). One day I got a call from my DM about a hard stop at a yellow light in SoCal while bobtailing. When you've driven millions of miles and your boss starts telling you how to navigate yellow lights, it tends to rub you the wrong way (on the plus side, he did at least have some driving experience). It didn't play a role in my deciding to quit after six months though. That was mainly because of the low pay (only 36 cpm).Bumper and Powder Joints Thank this.

After recently driving 11 weeks for a company (Acme Transport USA, Ltd.) with inward-facing cams and receiving calls from safety about it, I felt motivated to return to this thread and update the list. The 4 1/2-year-old comment quoted above is right: updating the list is time consuming and it doesn't take long for new lists to get buried in other posts. A wiki would work a lot better. If I build one, it'll be at truckerprivacy.org (just bought the domain today). Will report back if/when I get around to doing anything.
Here's the current updated list. It has 188 entries:
