I've fished a good bit in the Atlantic and the gulf . It seems like it was always called dolphin until probably the 80's . Like you stated restaurants and seafood sales changed it to mahi . It's one of my favorites.singlescrewshaker, Feedman, JolliRoger and 2 others Thank this.

When I was stationed in Gulfport in the late seventies it was called Dolphin. Then in 78 I deployed to an island in the South Pacific where they called it Mahi Mahi. A few years later I was in Hawaii where it was also called Mahi. So I assumed that it was an Atlantic/Pacific thing back then.singlescrewshaker, Feedman, JolliRoger and 3 others Thank this.
