    Hello Everyone:
For 4yrs, I've spent my time gaining experience as a company driver so that I could eventually end up pulling tankers/cryo-hauling.

Within the past year, I'd decided to take a 6 month sabbatical to work on my old house, which ended up turning into a 15 month project, due to being badly affected by the flooding, which took place last August in the midwest.

I'd like to go back to work now; but I'm not sure how a potential employer might feel about the gap in my work history. So, I'm wondering if it would look more favorable to them if I were to take a refresher CDL-A course. Would that show initiative on my part, or would a future employer more likely suggest that I work 6 months at another trucking company before I apply to them? Especially if it's cryo-hauling.

    That's right.
Each company has their own policies; probably dictated by the insurance company.
Some companies have their own, in-house refresher, but most don't.

Under no circumstance take a refresher course until the employer you want to work for says "we can hire you once you complete a refresher course." If they can hire you with a refresher course completed, they can wait to hire you in a couple of weeks after you start & finish the course.
DO NOT pay for a refresher course just because you assume it will make you hire-able for the average company. The answer to most questions in trucking is "it depends". Some employer you want to work for now, may be able to hire you now, and another employee you want to work for may need completion of the refresher course.

Now that's the kind of perspective I was hoping to attain, whether that be better or worse for my situation. Factual and straight to the point.

Just tell the employer you were off for that period of time, repairing your home from the flooding.
So all the time in the last 3 years have been covered.

Keepa you mouth a shut,,in other words, don't say anything they don't ask. Generally, a refresher course is for folks out of the loop much longer, and don't have recent references. 4 years, provided a clean split, is good enough, no refresher needed. What I've found, and I believe still holds true today, once a specialized outfit, like a tanker, hires you, you'll ride along for a couple weeks, so don't worry about that. A clean split from the last company is paramount. Provided you have good references, a gap such as yours these days isn't so uncommon, you'll be fine.
