The good thing about my job is I can’t run more than 40hour leaving only 30 hours. I don’t plan on doing more than 28 hours in two days if I have to

    1. He asked my wife about 3 years ago about starting a business. I said no at the time cause I was doing other stuff. But now I’m down with the idea.
    2. I don’t really get involved with my wife and her dad. I know he still gives her 500/month for her car. Which is nice. It’s not coming out of my end lol
    3. Ehh he works delivering potatoes. He doesn’t really complain. I’ve only heard him complain once about not getting paid enough.
    4. I’d give him 6.5 as a man. Cause he did technically abandon his family. But it was only cause he got deported for expired green card. He had to wait out 10years in exile. Started a new family out there( the mother also remarried, but only cause he started it). Now he’s been back for 3 years working for same company since he’s been back. I think other men respect him he was able to get family loans fairly easy for cdl school. You don’t just lend any family member thousands of dollars
    5. He was a diver before being deported. Apparently he was drug runner in Florida. In the late 80s and early 90s. Never got caught, so you know he drives safe. Got out and was hauling for himself until he got deported. Now he says he’s got 7 years left before retirement. So I know I can’t rely on him forever but he says he’s happy to help get us started. I believe him when he says that.

That’s the thing Im not passionate about turning wrenches, I only did it cause it’s a reliable gig. I had a co worker who did roadside for 2 years but ended working back for a company cause he was loser honestly. He was always angry, and short. But he made me realize I’m not passionate about this field. Trucking/auto makers are making trucks more complicated with their computer software for regular mechanics to fix easily. It’s honestly more expensive to start a diesel shop than it is a trucking company. I was telling my wife eventually we should buy spaceship to transport loads. Like in futurama

Ok if father in law is interested in starting a business why is he asking your wife about you doing it for him? That's the biggest red flag of several. It sounds like you're a convenient resource here. If he wants to start a trucking business tell him to go knock himself out. It's not hard to do. There's not enough meat on the bone for this one truck to support him plus you and the correct answer isn't adding another truck or two either. He might be the safest, best driver that ever was, which is great, but that doesn't equal business acumen. What sort of need is he looking to fill with this business?

3k a month truck payment, 2k a month insurance, 6k a month driver pay . Ur already 11k in the hole and havent even turned the key yet.. add another 10k per month in fuel cost right now.. then all ur other adminstrative and business costs to run the company...30k a month in revenue just to break even on the whole deal and hope theres no catastrophic failures, which it is trucking so there always will be... I mean as long as u know what ur getting into then so be it. But just remember all those bills are due every week, and ur invoices dont come in for 30 days or more.. if u got money burnin a hole in ur pocket then go for it.. the only way to make it work is to run it urself full time. Especially if all u got is loadboard work

Call OOIDA for insurance, They might be able to help with insurance cost, but a one truck operation, and paying a driver, you will also need workers comp on the driver, Fuel cost, Rate today, it will be tough, not saying its not possible but it will be hard, are you looking at getting your own numbers, or leasing onto a company?

Going into business with family or friends is rarely a good idea. And your wife will be in the middle of it when SHTF. And it will on some level. Probably sooner than later.
