1.) Too few straps - Length of trailer and cargo, (48' trailer, longer load) should at minimum had 5 or 6 straps. Penalty strap, 1 every 10 feet or portion of.
2.) No wraps - two at minimum would have been a good idea, considering if he wasn't allowed to use chains.
3.) No flag on the back, required because it extends past, regardless of oversize status.49 CFR 393.87(a) Even short of 4 feet, it would just be a common courtesy to let someone know they're about to run into the back of an extended load, and I might be mistaken, but those pictures makes it seem like that load overhangs by 4 feet to me.

I don’t need to stick this load to know I wouldn’t take it under a 12’4” overpass.

I figured it would be an expensive claim. I doubt the crane company will want to use those sections again.

Besides the fact that I'm pretty sure this isn't a legal tie down, check out how much tension he has on those tires in the rear pic. He is headed east out of Grand Junction, with all the bouncing and tossing that i-70 does, there's no way that is staying tight. But they're set up in Dotsero, so I'm sure they'll have a chat with him.

Personally I would make a crossover of those straps, forward one goes rearwards and the other end forwards, also make very sure the tension is really biting them into the rubber.

It's a pity too that the front bumper is too low to go over the step, that at least would have the front wheels with the best ever chock against forward movement. Perhaps if he could have got a pair of small ramps there to achieve the same result.

Yeah, cross over the straps like Spardo mentioned and crank them as tight as they will go.

That's how I regularly hauled on the landoll for light duty vehicles. You know you had them good and tight when you offload and the tires left rubber marks on the deck from being tightened down.
