Regarding the foot thing...I put my foot there because it is easier on my hips and back...we all have arthritis in different areas and we compensate by body positioning and moving around to what is comfortable for each of us. If I keep both feet on the floor all day long, I will not be able to walk when I stop for the evening without great pain. That foot isn't there all the time...only when I need to stretch out my hips. It might stay there for a while, then I'll put it back on the floor. As I've said in a previous post, I do not have it up there when I'm in traffic, on surface streets, in built up areas whether there's traffic or not or when I'm getting ready to exit the freeway. It's only on the open road when I have the cruise set at 64 and out in the rural areas. If a deer runs out in front of me, well, we're told run it down. I can keep my foot on the floor all the time and after about a year have to go home and sit around on Social Security that you will have to pay for.
Go on ahead and call Safety if you wish. I'll give you their phone number and my truck number...Send them a picture. Then you can pay for me for the rest of my life.
At least I'm not holding a cell phone up to my ear, texting, watching pornos on a computer, reading the paper, looking in four-wheelers for naked people, looking in trucks so I can be judgmental about what I see...I'm paying attention to the road. What about you? -
I see alot of 65 mph trucks try and pass other 65 mph trucks and i cant understand what these drivers are thinking. I just last week followed 2 company trucks for 10 miles watching one almost pull by the other and then on the next hill the other one will catch back up. Back and forth almost getting by the next driver. Its crazy!!! It must be a power struggle. I will gladly stay in the right lane until i know i can pass and not keep trading places. Im no trucker yet but I have rented 65 mph wore out Ryder box trucks and hauled 12000 lbs up I-77 and I-81 from GA to NJ atleast 20 times and even though on level ground you can run out w company trucks there is never any need for a driver to try and pass before a hill is approaching knowing im going to slow down to 50 mph cresting the hill! One more thing i have seen lately is big trucks and cars in that are in any incombination both are guilty in the right lane will be following each other and just as soon as you are about to pass in the hammer lane they will decide they are going to pass and there wont be anyone behind you in sight making you slam on your brakes! Some of these drivers that drive for a living dont seem to be all that good at what they do...

That said most travel with their foot buried in the pedal. With the slight variances in speed it gets aggravating to constantly adjust your speed to these slightly slower trucks across an 11 hour day. Sure you can lower your speed and put the cruise on. But when you have to drive 680 miles in a day, you don't have the luxury of slowing your truck down. Regional and local drivers might, but not OTR drivers.
Trying to find a gap to safely pass is almost impossible. You'll look in your mirrors and not see anything for a mile. Okay, now is a good time. You pull out and just a few seconds cars are lined up on your bumper. You are doing the speed limit, so what are they doing? I'll use my weight and hills to my advantage to pass. I don't want to slow anyone down but you don't really have a choice but to add an extra illegal hour to your driving day to slow down for every slower vehicle out there. It's hard to gripe about that you can't speed and break the law. The truck driver is trying to get down the road just like you are.
The logical solution is for the one in the right lane to ease up on the throttle a few seconds and it gets over with quick. But you can't educate all and some are just plain stubborn like you are talking about. As the population grows and companies trying to save money, the highways are just going to worsen.
It goes the other way too. I can't count the times I come up on a 50-55 mph vehicle only to be cut off by tailgating 4 wheelers that are too rude to let you out. It's a whole lot easier for a car to adjust speed up and down than a truck.Last edited: May 22, 2010
StormDancer Thanks this. -
I hear you. I posted this earlier today about being courteous.
I have never driven a tractor trailer but i know courtesy. I think like alot of folks have already said here people just dont seem to care anymore or maybe they dont know any better. I have always turned my lights off and on randomly to let a truck over but i dont have daytime running lamps on my F150. Shoot if i am in a rural area and see a truck closing in on another truck or car ill flash to let him over into the hammer lane. I have even tapped my brakes lightly out of courtesy if there was no one behind me to let a truck over a lane if he was closing in fast on another vehicle. Plenty of drivers during the day can see my right hand on top of the wheel making a circular motion waving them over. I think some drivers just stare down the hood at the road 15 ft in front of them and dont pay attention to whats ahead and the other drivers around them. I unfortunately have to commute on I-75 and I-285 5 days a week and see all kinds of fools out there! Drivers if i see you trying to get over a lane out here in traffic i'll try and let you over! Hopefully i'll be in a big truck soon. I'm trying to get my cdls now. I wanted to buy my own truck, authority and step deck to get started but i guess i need to get a year under my belt w a big company. I'm thinking Millis Transfer since Cartersville is only 30 mins from my house. -
