Mines a 400 JWAC and his is a 425 ATA.1951 ford, Dale thompson, Banker and 1 other person Thank this. -
The only 15 speed I ever drove was in a 379 glider and it was on the stick just like a splitter.ElmerFudpucker, 1951 ford, Dale thompson and 3 others Thank this.

My first rig was an 89 379 with a 15 speed and everything was on the shifter similar to my 18 speed, but different color splitter button.ElmerFudpucker, 1951 ford, Dale thompson and 3 others Thank this.

And his motor ain’t right is what I’m telling you. A 15 with a 425 ATAAC and 3;90’s ought to drag you around by the collar. Plain and simpleOldman83, ElmerFudpucker, sawmill and 5 others Thank this.

No they moved them to the shifter. They also changed the ratios with the 715 and up. They are closer together instead of a 10 speed with deep reduction.
Another thing about down splitting your 13/18 is the momentum you loose. If you gotta drop 2 gears you’re gonna let off twice in a pull. B models don’t recover well. Once you get to 16 that’s the same as what I call 9th in a 15. (I call a 15 like a 10) 1:1 is 1:1 no matter how many other gears you go through to get there. Power gets you up the hill not your gears plain and simple.
Look at it this way with both of you in direct gear (yours is 16) if your both running tall rubber or same rubber both running the same speed he is gonna be about 150 RPM higher than you. I can figure it exactly but that’s close enough for our example here. From the motor back everything here is equal. So why would you run off from him and hide in the hills? Because your motor has enough power to pull a slightly taller gear set in the rear which gives you an extra 5mph or so just in direct gear alone.Last edited: May 23, 2026 at 6:29 AM
Oldman83, ElmerFudpucker, sawmill and 7 others Thank this. -
I’ve seen 290’s so hot guys carry extra head bolts because it would pop the top on them.
so it’s entirely possible he was being sand bagged by those shiny 290’s -
What’s the tires sizes. And where is the weight riding. People don’t think about it but for whatever reason if you are heavy on the ### end it pulls extremely hard. And a bigger question when is he down shifting too soon, too late. Lots of variables here

Exactly. A lot of people are afraid to twist a B model. Like we talked about Justin that night we can pull that same hill but not at 1500…….
He and I ran to Tennessee that dang black truck of his stays with my flat top step for step. 4.5 to the gallon a piece but…..ElmerFudpucker, sawmill, Tall Mike and 2 others Thank this.
