I am in the market for a used 90s era w900 and finding them with DD 12.7L engines or Kitty Cat 3406E.

I would value anyone's direct experience with costs/performance of either of these engines. Especially repairs costs and what typically goes wrong nearing 1mil miles....

I know very little about DD series 60 engines..

    Thanks... :biggrin_25525:

I won't make the comparison between the two for you, but I will advise you to keep in mind Cat is no longer in the Big Truck business. They are still honoring their equipment for the time being, but at some point that will dry up.

It will never dry up, there are to many on the market and they are still making motors, just not on highway use.

the trucks with the detroit will be cheaper because nobody wants them, I would go with a 3406 without even thinking about it

The 60 series is easy to fix and great on fuel, If you maintain them they will last a long time and make you money. The 3406"E" will make your mechanic a lot of money. I worked on them for a long time, Look at the "CAT" and see if the middle of the oil pan is cracked. I would not worry about Cat running out of parts they sell lots of them. Just a thought!

if u can find a good Detroit, treat it with care and it'll take care of u. the cat is dependable, but expensive to maintain compared to the Detroit. if i had to do it over i'd do a 500hp Detroit.

The W900 I was looking at has the Detroit. But it also seems like it was cobbled together (as needed) with parts from all different trucks. It had an autoshifter and he removed it and installed a new in box 13speed (600,000 miles ago) and it has 2 different color fuel tanks - different color seats and so on. Rebuild was done on the DD around 600,000 miles ago. Rig has 1.1mil on it. I'm all for saving money on 'sharing' parts but given the chance to purchase something that is still as it was from day 1 is prolly better..Still has deer damage on the front. Sleeper color doesnt match cab color (close but not 'exact') - the plum color was hard to match I guess..

I think I will just keep looking for now....
