I have a few questions. I am working on a ‘92 Kenworth C500 but they are similar to the T800s. I am trying to get a tighter steering since it doesn’t get close to any of the suspension or axle components currently.

First how much does a steering gear turn either the input shaft side or the pitman arm spline?

Also, can you put a longer pitman arm on to increase the “throw” of the drag link to increase steering angle if the gear is maxed out? My current pitman arm is only 8.75” while my other trucks, with obvious different geometries, have arms in the 11” region.

I have a HFB70 steering gear and have set the manual poppets.

Any advice and input is appreciated.

Are you hitting the steering stops on the knuckles to the axle?

If you want to turn tighter just adjust them in and recheck clearance from steering components.

I set the LH side first to max turns. Then count the same turns on the RH. Steering wheel turns.

To the left I am but to the right I am not. It’s like the gear “bottoms” or runs out of rotation before it gets to the axle stop.

Are there timing marks on the pitman arm to the gear shaft? Are they aligned?

yes they are. There is another mark but it would be way off one direction

Hmm. Somethings not right. Other than maybe something internally broken in the gear.

Have you tried disconnecting the steering shaft at the input of the gear. You should be able to achieve the same number of input rotations from left to right.

The input is keyed with the notch for the bolt, correct?

I bought a new gearbox from Fleet pride one time. And it was one notch off, even though it was marked. And not long after that it started leaking so I went back to OEM.

To do this I probably should take the drag link off as well? I might try that and see if it will rotate both ways the same amount.

One notch on what? The pitman arm? From what I recall when I did the crosses in the steering shaft only goes on one direction.
