Listen to these folks they know whats up.
I got into the lease operator deal thru Transwood logistics back in 02. Was buying a truck thru them. Man was that a mistake. I had a 93 T-600 fall into my lap and took over the payments on it and payed it off.

If you want to buy a truck, go to select trucks of freightliner the have a first time buyer program. I did this my first time and it is a lot easier that trying to come up with a huge down payment. The have preselected trucks that you only have to have a $1000 down. The truck usually will be a freightliner with a Detroit in it. They will offer other things, like help with tax preparations and things like that. I bought one 6 years ago and least to swift. I strongly urge you to fine a better company. There is no money pulling dry van. You will make the most money is pulling some kind of tanker. That is what I do and I make a lot more in a years time. When I was least to swift they guaranteed me some much to get me to lease to them. I never made what they told me. I get out of my lease this way. They took me to court and tried to make me pay tags and insurance for the rest of the year. They forget that in my lease they guaranteed me so much. I proved that no matter how hard I run that I never got close. They judge told them that they broke the contract when I never made what they told me I would. If you do lease to a company, I Always make my own contract. Don't ever sign one of theirs with out reading everything. With Swift will only make 1500 to 1800 a week if you run 3600 miles every week. Where I 'm at now pulling a tanker I make 2500 to 3000 every week and home bout every night. Making this is only run about 3000 miles a week. These figures out after fuel and they have taken their parts.

...bunch of Arrow guys found out the hard way why you never want to L/P a truck. Company went belly-up, and guys who THOUGHT they had paid their trucks off STILL lost them because Arrow (the titled owner of the trucks) had used those trucks as collateral for other loans they had taken out to try to keep the company operating....and the bank wasn't going to release the collateral (title) until the loan was paid off. When the company closed its doors, the banks came after the trucks...even the ones allegedly paid for in full by the L/P drivers who THOUGHT they were merely waiting on the title to arrive in their mailbox.

Until your name is on the title of the truck, you aren't really an O/O because you don't actually own anything. If you want to buy a truck, get some money together and buy a truck. That purchase shouldn't be tied to your employment with a specific carrier, either. As long as you are making the payments, it shouldn't matter WHAT you are doing with it. If you lease it on with a carrier and things aren't working out, you need to be free to take that truck with you to another carrier...and you can't do that unless your name is on the title.

If the company you are working for holds the title to the truck you are driving, you can leave...but they keep THEIR truck. How is that different than a company driver? Well, first of all they will call you an "independent contractor" to avoid having to pay unemployment insurance (lose your job and you're on your own) workers comp (get hurt and you're on your own...unless you bought your own policy), their half of the employment taxes (you'll now pay ALL of it), operating expenses (fuel, tires, brakes, oil, etc...), truck payment & insurance, etc...all of that becomes YOUR responsibility now. They still control what you make, though...dispatching you...except now, some of the more devious carriers will start shaving miles as you near completion to try to break you. If they can get you to turn the truck in prior to completing the lease, or ensure that you won't be able to come up with the balloon payment at the end, then they can turn around and L/P that truck to the next sucker. Those 2010 trucks are already 3 years old...how many OTHER drivers have tried to L/P the same truck you are looking at and failed?

I have never seen a good reason to L/P a truck...but there are a million+ examples why it is a bad idea. Yet these threads keep popping up...:biggrin_25513:

Good point. I saw this in the "new posts"...didn't look for the date on the OP. I hate it when people go digging up dead threads....
