1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

    45 hours a week at 13.00 plus OT = $618 gross a week.

I would think you could make more OTR. 2,000 miles a week at .32 equals $640. Those are recession miles. Its better at the moment. What is the family situation like? Young kids and a wife at home tip the scale towards local except for the fact that they require more money.

I think wsyrob hit the nail on the head. What is the family situation like?

If you need to stay home then I would definately try to find a better local job, even if it's not in trucking.

It's still a very unstable marketplace out here regardless of what you are doing. I would simply ask what is going to give the most consistent pay with the minimum amount of risk.

Yes I have a 10 year old and a 6 year old at home and my wife supports anything I do. Now I talk about the equipment being crap its not me B*&^Hing about dumb stuff. I run a walking floor trailer and haul debri, I haveno tarp for the truck one of the trailer tires is slick as glass have to put air in 5 tires everyday because they wont fix them, steering wheel shakes so bad because one of the steer tires has bald flat spots on it and looks like its ready to go at anytime. Im just afraid to jump in the OTR game and go broke but at the same time Im afraid of bad things happening so my self or others with this truck.

Take the local job the kids will be grown out fast enough. But they need there Dad while they are growing up, regional is what I run Im at home every weekend (I will not work weekends they below to the family), and get back by the house several times during the week.

This is something you have to decide for yourself, but thats my 2 cents...

I forgot to mention that I pulled the trailer brakes put it in gear and just pulled away like it was nothing so I tell them about it and he shook his head and that was it. I would rather stay local but just don't know where to go from here.

I am about to get my CDL through a local outfit in my home state and was really worried about driving otr in the winter time. Is it really dangerous? Also, does the company usually not put a trucker on the road in extreme conditions? Thanks for the feedback.

SBATSON, we've talked in the past, you don't have to mention who you work for now, you could PM me since i'm kind of in your area and would like to know which trucks to steer clear of in my travels, but anyhow you've got to be careful with the new CSA rules, as it stands that companies problems will become yours upon inspection, and if you're in equipment that rough no matter the circumstances of needing work at the moment, you're putting yourself at a great risk of not being to go anywhere else due to a poor safety rating. Something to think about, although nothing is set in stone in Florida with the new CSA ratings, this is something you need to keep in mind, I wish I knew more about Fort Walton to where I could be of some help to you, all I know about is CEI, but as we've discussed in the past you're going to have to wait for someone to die to get a job there, they do have some old farts there though so your odds might be good. Think about your decissions long and hard, if you really wanted to run regional you probably wouldn't have to come on here and ask advice, you'd go ahead and do it, it's tough on family life and you probably know that, but at the same time your current local position is putting you at a great risk with their shotty equipment, whichever direction you take I hope it works out to your best advantage.

Your kids need a Dad not just a Mom. I had to make the same decision 18 years ago. I took local runs so I could be home with the family i.e kids. Best thing I ever did. Time flys and the kids will be gone sooner then you know it, and otr trucking will be hear after they are gone.
