All this talk about old stereo systems reminded me of the completely awesome stereo I put together in high school. Kenwood 80-watt amp with 0.04% THD, a Denon tuner (FM was still a thing back then), Teac cassette deck, etc. I don't remember the brand of speakers or the turntable but they were the best. I sold the whole thing to some dude in Nebraska for just a little below what it cost me after using it for about ten (10) years. Sold all my vinyl to a dude I worked with at the record store. The missus has cursed me a few times for that decision, but we weren't together at the time, though she had experienced its awesome sound more than a few times.

For a while, I regretted it, but no longer. I remember moving all that stuff from home to college to home a few times. It was a giant PITA. The speakers weighed forty (40) pounds each. The vinyl probably weighed triple that.

What I regret now is spending sixteen hundred dollars ($1,600) in 1979 dollars for the system. ($7,359.07 in 2026 dollars.) Wtf was I thinking? I wasn't. I was a teenager. Sure, it was handy at parties and the aftermath (there's nothing quite like listening to Bill Withers in the warm afterglow, especially with 0.04% THD), but I'd probably be able to retire if I had invested that money in Microsoft in 1986. I could afford a $38,000 lawn mower and a hired hand to drive it while I sip rye whisky and smoke a cigar on the deck.

But as my MIL (RIP) used to say, "If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas."
