    I'd say -- 2 years, minimum.

That's becuz some fuel fleets ask for that...as a bare minimum.

Also: something else to consider --

If you start out by pulling box-type trailers for a few years -- you will then MUCH BETTER APPRECIATE what you have -- when you later transition over to tank trailers (mainly becuz you will have experienced the differences with each, first-hand). :D

    Voice of experience there.... o_O

    Probably.

There used to be a lot of mom-n-pop food grade tanker outfits years ago, but KAG bought them all up. The kind of places where the owner of the company would give you your road test.

Find out if there's a vinegar plant near you. That is one commodity that any remaining small outfits are usually involved in, generally handling loads that the big players don't want.

If you find one near you, stake it out and make note of the names you see on the tractor doors, USDOT numbers are helpful if you can get them, too.

Seed oil and sweetener plants are good places to stake out also, but usually it's Cargill, ADM, or Bunge, and mostly that work is nailed down by major players and O/Os. Still, ya never know.......

Don't get too stuck on you "want to do hazmat". Some of the food grade places pay more than the small chemical carriers.

By all means, get your hazmat. Food grade carriers haul ethanol, citric acid, phosphoric acid, and other hazmat stuff.

A lot of tanker companies want you to have AT LEAST one year of CDL A experience before they'll hire you.

You might just find a carrier desperate enough to take a chance on you.....but you're really gonna have to beat the bricks to find it. Good luck!
