Probably 4 times the price or more. 12v cost = x, 48v cost = 4xjaffles, TheLoadOut, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this.

Rear gear train?? So to pull the head you go to pull the whole motor or does the cams come out the front. Or am i thinking of this wrongSons Hero, Suspect Zero, jaffles and 4 others Thank this.

I thought that initially, perhaps an independent unit that deals with emissions and leaves the motor to being a motor. Reading on though others have suggested not the case. So I'm guessing a 7 step processes and a 48V alternator be an easy 20-30K replacement plus labour. Then the dreaded EGR unit added. No doubt will have plenty of Cummins tax, but also looks to be modular. Weather they sell a specific chamber or the whole thing as one will be the out of warranty lived experience.
So reading between the lines for the modern truck yet again. After 215K mile, trade in and upgrade as we have completive finance deals available.......TheLoadOut, D.Tibbitt, broke down plumber and 1 other person Thank this. -
I'm not sure how the cams come out yet. I'm assuming the cams can either stay in the head when the head is removed or the cams come out the front or lift up like a Detroit. Very sure they wouldn't make us pull the engine to pull the head.TheLoadOut, D.Tibbitt, wore out and 3 others Thank this.

dont be too sure , the modern engineering doesnt want you to work on this #### . GM , Ford John Deere to name a few , pessimistic i reckon but its going downhill fast .Suspect Zero, TheLoadOut, D.Tibbitt and 2 others Thank this.

Is that how the paccar engine is? Ive never worked on one but i thought i remember a youtube mechanic complaining they had to pull the engine to get the head off because its rear gear train but i could be remembering wrongTheLoadOut and broke down plumber Thank this.

The new after-treatment is some 150lbs heavier. The last time emissions regulations caused a redesign truck weights jumped 500-1000lbs and fleets were too stupid to realize that fact and booked loads based on previous truck weights.
So, to accommodate the extra weight, Cummings worked hard to take 150lbs out the block. Moving the cam gear and accessories to the back of the engine was part of change to make things lighter. So pulling the engine or the cab to get to the cams or head might be the reality. This is now very common in the automotive world.
Also notice how the block is very webbed in its casting. Webbing has been often used to stiffen up aluminum castings, but seldom cast iron. Iron is just not as flexible as aluminum, and you thin it out and cast in thin webs and you are just going to pay hell engineering it not to crack.
I wouldn't be surprised if these things are 400k time bombs. Thin light weight webbed cast iron, high voltage electrics in the exhaust, cams and heads not serviceable. What could possibly go wrong?Otr Traveler and jaffles Thank this. -
Paccar MX13 is rear gear train but an in block cam with pushrods. You don't have to mess with the cam just to pull the head.
To change the cam however, the engine has to be pulled. Sounds like alot of work but 35hrs can get a engine pulled, cam and followers swapped and back in the truck running. I've done it in 23hrs when I did a dozen under a campaign.Otr Traveler, Suspect Zero, mjd4277 and 3 others Thank this. -
Now that you say that i think thats exactly what it was. they were doing a cam job . Sounds like alot of work
