What's up with OD building a giant break bulk terminal near the Fla. Tpk. in Wildwood, Fl, that appears to be about 200 doors and 2 buildings? They also bought a fleet of 48' van trailers and tandem dolls just sitting and going to waste. I think they closed a small terminal and might be working out of 20 doors.
This is a huge waste of money and hopefully they have a plan that makes sense. The taxes, electric costs and maintenance without any income is ridiculous. It has to be costing a small fortune.
What's spot with Wildwood terminal?

Being that OD is the most profitable LTL carrier I'm sure they know what they're doing. I've got a buddy that runs out of there and he's doing good.navypoppop, Concorde and drvrtech77 Thank this.

Concorde,
Thanks for the link to a great article. It is all about the Lakeland, Fl terminal and not the Wildwood break bulk. I understand that OD is one of the prime LTL companies out there but I only asked about the building of such a large facility and equipment purchase just to sit almost empty.Concorde Thanks this. -
Ah, sorry, my mistake.

Wildwood is about 300 miles from Miami and Savannah which makes it about the maximum a hub turn can do. My guess is they plan to route all the freight south of Sarasota through the new hub, which will ease pressure on Tamapa and Orlando.

That is true but to build this huge break bulk terminal, buy a ton of 48' van trailers and tandem dollies just sitting for months seems crazy. You can assume that they purchased the equipment in anticipation of opening up for Florida Turnpike doubles but to sit idle except for a few doors being used doesn't seem profitable at this point. Also thanks to all posts on this subject as it makes for great conversation.

Part of the deal might be they never know how long it will take to get the new trailers. My company ordered around 7 or so new trailers and we keep hearing the next week they’ll be ready thing. If they know they’re going to need those trailers say by November or something it makes sense for a big company to order them in plenty of time to make sure they have them when they need them.

I heard today that they have been loading the tandem dollies inside the 48' dry vans and shipping them to the Western states for use in mountain doubles according to one of OD drivers.OldeSkool Thanks this.
