I am thinking about changing my business model from port work back to flatbed (lumber, drywall and such). I've never really used load boards. However the one time I did I found ONE company/dispatch that I still work with today even though I cancelled my load board membership. I am in Virginia. Interested to here the good bad and ugly. Thanks!
Who will ROB me the least? Load boards or Dispatchers Good and Bad

Dispatchers are simply middle men doing the negotiating and planning for drivers who can't or won't do it themselves. Why would you want another middle man on your business taking a cut? There are enough already.
Brokers are technically middle men too but with a few differences that matter. They have customers, contracts, skin in the game.
They have always been with us. They have direct access to shippers with freight, something that's very hard for one-truck Chucks to find.
i don't consider them 'taking from me' since i'm the one negotiating the rate directly with them. If I agree to a rate then I get what I needed/wanted to do the job, no 'taking'.
Falling into the trap of being taken by a broker is a result of poor negotiation or desperation.brian991219, tscottme, Toomanybikes and 3 others Thank this. -

Makes you wonder how brokers even got started in the first place.
When i hauled food waste. We had the same pickups from the same plants. Everyday. But the trucks weren't doing the business. We were just carriers. Business was the broker. The broker started in 1945.
In 1945. The only Technology was the telephone and a vehicle. And I don't think any of the current business existed. -
I hear the real money is in pulling a hopper using a load board....
D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
It’s like asking, “If I go to preschool, who will “bully me more at age four…boys or girls?”
Depends on you.Diesel Dave, D.Tibbitt and rollin coal Thank this. -
Hopper pulling loads off a load board will turn in a Welfare Wagon.
-
Agreed. I wouldn't do that off a load board BUT if I found a reliable broker..... might be worth it. Any suggestions?
