My son -- big/tall, overweight, and academically brilliant -- was heckled and bullied all throughout his school years. (One day he even came off the bus with a bloodied tongue 'cause some kid smacked his face against the seat in front of him on the way home.) It was more than just "boys being boys".
Well, one day he reached his limit. A kid taunted him in the hallway and my 6'4", 280 pound son took one good swing at him and flattened the kid. Both boys were suspended and hubby and I had to appear before the principal to discuss my son's behavior "problem".
The result? The principal said he called us in as a matter of district policy... and told us privately it was about time that our young man decided to stand up for himself. And with a smile and a handshake, we were on our way home.
As we suspected, the bullying stopped that day. Not only from that one particular kid, but from all of them.
Oh.... and no, I did not punish my son. Sometimes a guy has to do what a guy has to do.
