Well, Getting the CDL has made a huge impact on my life. My current Job earns me $59,700/yr I don't do OTR, I work on the oilfields in Alaska driving truck, hauling cement and also operating equipment used to mix and pump cement into wells. When I did do OTR it was exciting, it fit my lifestyle, I had no family anymore, so I needed to find something that occupied my time and trucking filled my time just fine. I enjoy being alone, I enjoy the long travels and seeing new sites. I took all my breaks at rest stops, and would walk around to stretch my legs and just explore in general. As far as my social life, while doing OTR, I didn't really have one except when I took my 4 or 5 days off. during that time, I would work on my 1954 chevy truck that is still in Nevada waiting for me to finish restoring it. I choose not to have a social life; I am sure you could have one if you chose to. OTR money was good, my first year was $32k which wasn't bad in my eyes. I will soon be returning to OTR, in march to be exact due to my company cutting our hours which when added up is a big chunk of change....so I figure if I am going to take a pay cut I might as well do it in an warmer enviroment, the -80 weather just isn't cutting it anymore...sometimes it gets to -100 and its hard to breathe in that type of weather not just because of the cold, but also the snotcicles forming out of your nose lol. So that is my reason to returning to OTR, and I look foward to it. If I missed anything, be sure to ask, I am happy to answer anything. I think of trucking like a mind game similar to training in the military, you just need to stand up for yourself, don't let anyone walk over you, don't get upset with the rude people, being happy and keeping a positive attitude will ensure your success in trucking, just kill'em with kindness. Don't get angry with the drivers on the road, drive defensively, most drivers don't understand the physics of your truck...and can you blame them? I didn't understand either till I became a trucker... Besides, The driver might have made you angry, but imagine if you reacted in a violent way, and came to find out later, there was also 3 little kids in the back seat; it would be horrible, it's not their fault they have idiot for a father or mother. So basically just keep your cool, stay confident, positive and I am sure you will have no problem with trucking.

    thanks, I appreciate your info.

I can understand the being alone part. Most of the time I am and when I need to get away, Ill drive. Its funny, sometimes Ive left work on a friday and 8 hours later im in Atlanta lol. Its weird but I love to drive. It gives me time to think about things and analyze situatuions. My friends constantly get pissed when they call me up and I am a couple of states over and driving from central florida, its a heck of a drive to the ga/fl border. But they have acustomed to it and now they just call me to find out if im even remotely near them to hang out. I currently work for fedex and priacticaly drive for 8 hours a day. Even tho its around town (tri-country area) it doesnt bore me. Plus I got time to get married in the future, I want to see some country before Im tied up.
