1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

Hello ALL! Have been kicking around the idea of getting back into the drivers seat. I have, lets say 10 months OTR driving about 4 years ago. I only quit due to family and home reasons. I was pulling a flat bed and for the most part I would have to say I enjoyed it. Now looking to get back into driving.

I have been lingering around this website reading your posts on companies and getting a lot of great information from them. I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone!!

I would like to get back into driving flats again. Did not mind the "extra" work that was involved in it, tarps, straps, chains, etc. It was actually a nice work out for a little over weight person like myself, but I can hold my own usually.

I have been calling many trucking companies lately and finding out that they want experience in the last 1-2 years. Thanks insurance companies and "super truckers" that do not know when to shut down, I AM NOT trying to be rude by that comment but most would agree for the most part.

Is there any companies that offer a minimal "refresher" course. One company I talked to said they would put me teaming with a trainer for 2 months and maybe make $600 a week. Okay I thought about that for a minute or two. My problem with teaming is not knowing the driver I am put with. I get along with most but usually can get annoyed with someone else that I do not know well, habits, etc. I would not mind a week or two to be sure I know how to drive still.

I have been contacted by a Fleet Owner on driving one of his expedite strait trucks and even talked to one of the main guys at the company he leases through. Been thinking of that other than it, once again is a team job, but he does have solo jobs, just not at this moment. I have never talked to anyone on the phone for 1.5 hours before other than family and the guy seems true blue! Maybe? A lot of perks but do not know with no taxes coming out and never know where or when you are gonna drive. But I hear there can be good money in it.

Just came across Prime again. Called them but was on hold for 15 minutes. Must be no one there on Saturdays. Now wouldn't you think that companies would want someone there to answer phones on Saturday and Sundays for the people that may not be able to call Monday thru Friday? But any who.

Well if there is anyone that could drop me a line and give me a little info it would be great. I know I am not going to be "top pay" the day I start driving but do not want to be scraping every week either. And I know about the trucking industry most are scraping by sometimes. I know I can drive a truck, I know I can chain or strap a load, I know I can tarp a load, I know I can live the lifestyle again but I know insurance companies do not care about that, and at the same time I can understand why.

Well if anyone responds to this THANK YOU!
Take Care and Safely Drive On Truckers, Drive On!!

Well I have pretty much given up. No company is willing to hire me. Gonna have to stay out of the driving industry I guess. Thinking about just giving up my CDL so I do not "want to drive again" any more.
Thanks for the "views" and no helpful responses.

Take care all you current drivers! Thanks for what you do!

Hi hand101. It is rough. I have 13 years behind me, and have been off the road for 5 years. I'm not having much luck either.

No way, driver!!! Don't give up now... I have a "history" of drop-kicking employers as if I'm starrin' in the motherf_____g NFL, so it has been especially difficult for me to get back out on the road during this "Great Recession..." I had a few "false starts" and whatnot, but now it looks as if I'll be heading out this week to run hard, literally coast to coast the way I like to run... can't wait to climb back into a truck. Keep tryin', hand!!! Check out FLEETDIRECTORY.COM (lot of companies listed there by state) and the "Transport" column of Craigslist, not just in your city but in outlying areas, 10? I know how ya feel... I've been goin' through the wringer myself, but gettin' out there again will be that much sweeter for all the bull$h!t I've been dealin' with lately. "WAHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Okay, I'm gone... "Adios!"

P.S. Oh, yeah, I forgot to add that most public libraries have free computer labs now, in case Internet access is an issue... some clowns may squawk about my sayin' this, but I'm just tryin' to help you get back out where ya belong, 10? Don't beat yourself up too hard over all the recent grief... you're NOT the only one goin' through all this bull$h!t. Plenty of people are losing their homes and the shirts off their ###### backs in this mess, so count your blessings and keep tryin', hand!!! "NEVER SAY DIE!!!" And whatever ya do, don't surrender that CDL-A, because you worked too hard for it and it's not a thing to be lightly tossed...

Unless you hook up with an O/O who couldn't care less about that bull$%!t... or a small outfit (anywhere up to 200 trucks) that doesn't waste time with that cheesy DAC bull$h!t. They're out there, you just hafta do a little more research, 10? I would advise all CDL-A holders to retain their status, even if that means shellin' out for the odd medical... use those low-cost clinics to maintain your status until this whole f_____-up situation turns around. The time will come when that CDL-A is again worth heller money... no, you won't get rich doin' this, but you can have the time of your life while contributing to society and havin' a f_____g blast. That's my $.02, for what it's worth, and there will always be some WHINERS to differ in opinion... BRING 'EM ON!!! By the way, I'm kinda proud of my new "Avatar"---it's actually a picture of me skatin' the overhang back in '78... took me about 45 minutes to crop and resize that f_______ picture, so hopefully you GOD-###### POGUES will appreciate it. If ya don't, just picture me slingin' a big ol' Australian Salute your way... "AND HERE'S TO YA!!!"

I've been out of a truck for the last 5 months, and only worked locally for the year prior.

I had been in the office for almost 5 yrs when I went back to driving the first time. I'm not sure where they verified the experience at but I got a job driving flat's for Boyd.

It can be done, just keep hacking away at it.
