I have a 95 379 Pete I just bought. It runs great on flat ground but when you get into small hills it runs out of power pretty quick. Ok not so much of a problem just turn it up some and go on. Ok I get the A/R # and engine serial number and call the Pete place up and give them the #. I find out it's a multi-torque engine possibly set at 365/410 h.p.. Again no problem just turn it up some! They are doing some research but not sure their heart is into my interest of a little more power. Any ideas? Anyone been in this siuation? What options are there? My ole B-Model Cat will eat this truck up, any help would be appreciated.

what is it? a C-12 3406? if its a C-12 it wont ever run like a 3406B
-
need more info on which cat it is. what hp rating?
-
Would most likely be 3406E or a 3176, c12/3192 came later.
Check your fuel transfer pump the spring may be weak giving low psi. If so just shim it.
Mine would not go over 70 psi, made shims from ring terms to 100 psi.
The kw shop wanted to replace the pump for 250.00 + 110hr shop rate.
My cost 45 cents in parts and 20mins of time. -
The first thing I would check is the air cleaner, clean the housing before you put it back in, #2 check the CAC 35 lbs steady then shut off air and it should not loose anymore than 4 lbs in 15 seconds. #3 check the fuel preasure and change the filters. #4 remove the intake and exhaust from the turbo look for damage on the turbine, exhaust, use a small mirror and a flashlight to look at the outer ends of the turbine. #5 do a valve set, and run it with the covers off and check that all valves open properly, and you have no broken springs. #6 look into the fuel tank and look for bubbles in the return line. Just a thought!

If its a 95 I'm guessing its a 3406E, if I remember correctly you can go as high as 550hp if its indeed a 3406E but it also depends on what injectors and turbo it has......
My first Pete was 95 with an E and it was set at 435 but could only go 455 w/o injectors (turbo was ok) and it didn't pull real good either..
I got a chuckle out of your B model comment I thought the same with that dang 435 I had !!
good luck.. -
yep what all those guys said if it is a 3406E like jp3 said the air to air might have a leak if its original also if the ecm was reflashed recently by cat that would have alot to do with the way its running. the new settings that cat reflash for epa flatout ruin a good running cat.

Went through that when Kenworth rebuilt a 5EK. Havent had everything go correctly yet, to have Mr. Haney fix the problem, but have all intentions of taking advantage of his expertise...

If its a 5EK you're out of luck, the low power multi-torques were pretty poor power wise and they cannot be uprated (though Cat anyway) past 410hp, to go to 435 or higher you will need pistons, cam, injectors and turbo. The aftermarket guys may be of more help.
One thing you may be able to do that might help is check the rating, often multi-torque software has several ratings, if you lucky it will also have a rating for a strait 410HP which would be better than the multi-torque. Changing the rating only takes a few seconds and can be done by anyone with ET and the customer password, its not the same as reflashing so you dont get stuck with a LOW NOX file. -
fwiw- I know its not recommended by Cat due to hardware differences, but I have reflashed 435's to early pre lo nox 550's with very good results....not a true 550 but powr and mileage have increased. thanks Rob
