So I've got my eye on a great used truck. Trouble is, it's in Miami and I'm in Minneapolis. It's for sale by a private party (individual). Let's say I fly down, check out the truck, take it to a diesel tech to inspect it thoroughly, hand over cash and receive clear title in hand. I cannot simply just hop in and drive it home, can I? Technically it's still a CMV, so do I have to fly home with the title, register it, get all my permits and decals, fly back down and then drive home? Ugh... Now, hypothetically, if it were a dealer I was buying from, is there such a thing as a temporary tag for a CMV to get it home? Or would it be the same jumbled scenario? Thanks guys and gals.
Buying used truck from private party and driving it home?

I think you can just get a temp permit. I did that with mine. AND to my luck, most all scales closed so only had to pay for 2 states permits.. argh.
-
Did you do that ahead of time online for the states you knew you were going to pass thru? Or did you have to stop at the coop and go inside and buy a tag? Thanks!
-
i did it passing through because when the scales are closed... no need to stop.

If you are bobtailing the truck back and not carrying a load you should be able to get a temp transport tag. All that is, is a paper you put in your window from the state saying you are just transporting the truck to home.

When I bought mine out in CO, the dealer hooked me up with a temp. CO plate. That got me through CO. When I hit the KS coop, I found out that I wasn't good to go home....had to pay $39 to cross the state. I dodged the scales in MO, and there weren't any in IL for me to worry about.
If I had known KS was gonna lighten my wallet by $39, I wouldda dodged that one, too.

That's what our news ones came with.

I have a hard time understanding why a single tractor matters when there are many tractor trailers out that can be charged for logs, etc..... The DOT should introduce a temp tag thats good for all 50 states and does not expire for 30 days. Yes they would loose a few bucks but if they got more strict about who they pull in and the safestat scores, it would make up for it.

I bought a truck and trailer in atlanta earlier this yr, im from ohio. got a temp tag from the dealer for both units. i looked into this an found that no one can give you a straight answer. I tried calling dot in a couple of the states, and the guy i'm leased onto called a few different govt departments too. for everyone i called, i got a different answer. and it really dont matter whos right, if someone thinks your in the wrong even if you arent, it could be expensive to fight.
the biggest problem i had was that i wanted to put freight on the trail instead of coming back empty. the dealer told me i could only get freight in GA with temp tag, and that didnt work for me. ended up bringing down the plate off another car trailer and bolting it on hoping no one would catch on. then i got told irp that i had sold my tractor and wanted to transfer tags....they faxed me a temp. cab card with new truck info, and i had no problems loading and going home. i still havent sold my peterbilt yet so i dunno if that will pose any problems when i go to sell or not, but it got me home. -
Go to DMV in the state you buy it and get an "in transit permit". You have now paid fees and can move it legally.
