Hey all my name is Cody. Im currently thinking ablout enrolling with a cdl school here in Ogden, Utah. I have been sitting here weighing the pros and cons about this new life im about to get into. I have a kid on the way and can not find a decent job to save my #### life. tired of swinging a hammer and tired of mowing lawns. The companies they send students too are : Swift, Werner, May Trucking, Gordon Trucking, Central Refrigerated, James Clark and andrus transportation. Any info on them I have been doing research but not much just a few complaints here and there as I suspected.
What i really want to know is of course "is it worth it" obviously I have to put time in to make it actually pay off, but in this first year or however longer it takes to get to the comfortable position into getting into a local run or what have you. I really need something that I can do that will provide for my family cause I am drowning here. Didnt mean to sound desperate but it really did.
So please comment, reply, bash,
thanks all and cant wait to read the replies
probably heard it all before

I started with Swift. Central Refrigerated is a division of Swift. I did pretty well with them. The key (I guess with any company) is to get in good with your dispatcher. Be his or her friend if at all possible.
Anyway, a decent way to judge a company is to look at the drivers. If a company's drivers are usually filthy pigs, stay away from that company. It means they either run too hard to get a bath, don't have enough money for a bath or both. Conversely, if most of the drivers appear clean and put together whatever their body shape and size, it's probably a decent company.
Since you have a new baby, try to find a company with a terminal in your area. I know Swift has one...the others? I don't know. -
Dude, it's not the company, or, what will the company do for you, or, how much will they pay etc. It's about YOU. What will you contribute to the company. Will you take this opportunity and make a go of it? There are lots of successful drivers out there, as well as un-successful drivers. So, which are you? It's kind of like the guy who shows up for work at his new job on the first day and asks when is payday? Or the other guy who shows up and asks what his job entails? Make sense?

Makes perfect sense, Im not here looking for the holy grail. Im just trying to figure out that this is something i can be proud of and that will be good for me and my family. Im kind of a loner anyway so in that sense this wont be too out of the norm for me and since i have moved so much in my life and having to drive long periods of time doesnt bother me either. I guess what I kind of am looking for is affirmation which is stupid on my part.

No.
If it were, there'd be a waiting list to hire-on with these road outfits.
But it is a job, tho.
Which could eventually lead to a steady paycheck.
That in itself is it's own reward, I suppose.
Then again, McDonalds and El Pollo Loco are steady paychecks, too.
The thing about this job is that it will rob you of your life as a husband, a father, and a citizen.
And you can't put a dollar sign on that... -
but as for me and jobs it is hard to get hired because i am heavily covered in tattoos and swingin hammers and #### like that is seasonal, so looks like the road will be my next home until i can find something different or get a local route...

So basically you think of a trucker as a loner? I have a lot of friends and family....Apparently you DONT .
-
Did I call truckers "loners"... NO I did not.
Was simply stating that I was. So relax there cupcake dont get all bent out of shape. -
Just a random "hmmmm?". Are there any tats out there about trucks and trucking? Wonder what the reaction would be if a new recruit showed up covered in KWs and Petes and company logos?
-
Yes I feel being some what a loner helps allot means you can entertain yourself I know what you meant. As long as you have a clean driven record and if you are married you have trust in your relationship I say go for it,only way if you will know if it is your thing. Don't get sucked into lease program. Just be a company driver. They will make the lease sound good but what ever you do don't,especially where you plan on going local as soon as you can. Good luck in your decision.
