I've been trying to get more resources or information on this for a while, and can't find anything reasonable yet.
I need to have a car of mine transported from Los Angeles to Chicago. So far, all I've seen is companies that are the equivalent of brokers posting to boards for auto transport jobs, and of course, they take a huge cut of whatever the agreed upon price is with the driver.
Does anyone here know of any forums, boards, or websites that deal directly with people hauling cars? I imagine there should be a wide range of people who drive to one state with a full load and drive back with an empty or partially full load and could possibly pick up my car on the way back, for a price of course.
Any ideas?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

You can call any major moving company. They also haul cars, either in the van or via a car carrier. Or contact an auto auction, they deal with car transports.

all you need is a 16 ft utility trailer and ramps...Otherwise allow me has a good solution

Good tips. I'll try those out. I guess at that point the only difficult thing would be finding those companies.
Any other ideas? -
And a truck to pull that trailer. I live in Chicago, and my car is in LA. I don't have a truck, and renting the trailer, truck, and paying for gas, and spending the 2-3 days driving will be more expensive than just paying a shipping company to do it for me. I'm trying to find a way to do it for less than $750.

This place here will do it for $895.00 if you're in no rush, $995.00 if you are. Probably as cheap as you are going to get.

Good Luck with finding somebody to do it less than $750

Here's the concept in my mind.
You pay a company to move a car for you. What they do is they take a broker's fee, and list your shipment with a competitive price on a dispatch board.
For example, the company that I got a quote of $750 for is charging me $150, and the agreement is that I pay the driver with a money order upon shipment of $600. What I'm trying to find out is where I can find drivers directly, so I pay $600 or $650, not $750.
Pirate4x4.com has a section for hauling for this very purpose, but given the nature of that discussion board, you will only find so many drivers. -
I just called the company I'm currently using. They said at $750, I'm the highest paying customer on their dispatch board moving out of California, with other cars sitting between $550 and $675, with their broker fee included. They said they could have a driver moving from Chicago *to* LA for $500 within 2 days, but for some reason nobody's driving out of LA.
