i have drove pieces of junk before, but never gone very far with them
yesterday i went out in a old volvo, mechanic said it was from the late 70s with no air ride, no air condition, no radio, no tilt wheel no cruise control of course and could barely pull my 26k load
i took it from indianapolis to marshal illinois, speedometer didnt work right...said i was rollin 52 the whole way and if i went faster the truck felt like it was gonna fall apart
it took over 2 hours each way and when i got back i felt like a zombie...i followed my buddy there who was lucky enough to snag one of the newer volvos that has AC radio and everything else in it
so much respect to the older drivers who did this everyday for much more then 4 hours a day.....my whole body is sore frm that truck
respect to the older drivers

No wonder you're so crabby all the time... -
my pa drove since 1980.Ford cab over day cabs and they had air ride seats.Nice trucks. I never heard of a truck like the one you drove...oh well....you could of injured your back with that truck....or got plenty of equipment violations from how you described it
-
its either drive the truck and make money or go home

Chrome on a Volvo is like lipstick on a pig... ain't no sense in it.
When I first saw this thread, I thought I would add my $.02 about "older drivers." Age isn't necessarily an indicator of experience in this industry. But I see you're talking about something else... imagine how it was way back in the day, when truckers would camp out together in public parks or other areas where they would generally not be hassled by old school bears who knew what time it was. I'm talking about groups of truckers cooking out in the field... and sleeping in fartsacks or blankets on the grass, as there were no sleepers back then and your only other option was to sleep on a plank between seats in the cab ("Gee, I'll take the grass for $500, Alex!!!"). Despite the primitive equipment (funny to hear drivers ##### now about bumps in road work) and the long hours spent on cheesy roads before the interstate system was built, those hands must have had some good times out there... in that respect, I guess things haven't changed. It all boils down to attitude and the hands with whom you run... I've run clear across country and wound up hoarse on the other coast because I've yakked and laughed so hard. I don't f___ around when it comes to running partners... if I start hearing someone whine, I'll lose that hand like the "Shadow." He was a really cool hand I ran with one time from TX up to VA. "Shadow"---what a cool handle, just like the hand himself. Okay, that's it for this forum, I'm outta here! "Adios!"

bigredsterling and Freebird135 Thank this. -
That's the difference between an old trucker and a young one.......
I'd have refused to drive the junk truck and gone home for the day.
I'd rather lose a day by my own choice than lose the next 2 or 3 because I caved in to the junk truck that beat me to death and couldn't work cause I hurt too much to drive.
Just like sticking your hand in the fire.....if it hurts the first time......
Are you gonna see if it hurts the second time........
Or......just continue to be a slow learner????? -
My grandfather drove truck way back in the day before air brakes or anything. I remember him telling me a story about when air brakes first came out!!
Now he new truck driven like none of us could imagine!! Well maybe a few on here can remember that!!

I think she'd better be happy. She didn't say it didn't have power steering! LOL I've done that more than a few times! The only times I actually liked driving in rain and snow!
