Ok day 1 has come and gone. Eight hours of classroom time. We have 11 in class and we all signed our life away with all kinds of contracts, promissory notes and miscellaneous paperwork required by DOT regs. Went over general requirements and regulations for persons holding a CDL. Had lunch and then back to the class. Went over logbooks and Hours of Service. On one of our breaks I met a Millis driver who had driven for them 20 years. He's say that Millis is the best of the 9 nine companies in his lifetime. Says the company is more like a family he also says the miles are there for anyone who wants them. Off to study now and rest up for tomorrow's 6 am start. Sugar and Lace if ya'll are watching your dad just can't stop talking about you and he says hey!

    Hey TD -

The first day does suck nothing exciting at all. Maybe you'll get lucky and start your Millis 500 tomorrow and get the time in the trucks.

Good luck and keep posting on your progress!

The second day has come and gone. Ten hours of (ugh!) classroom. Ok thats over now, tomorrow we get to go on the range. I will fill you all in on that. Should be interesting with 3 trucks and 11 clasmates. Harold Brown is our instructor. He knows his stuff and he's a very cool guy. 10-4 good buddy over and out.

ok Day Three on the range. All we did was upshift from 2, 3 and 4 and down 4, 3, 2. It has been 15 years since driving a tractor. Boy was I rusty my mind was going way too fast on my first go round. Itwas like I have never did it before. The second time around was much better. By the end of the day we all pretty much had it going well. Fun times. Our trainer Harold has the patience of a saint.

Day 4 has come and gone - another fun day. We went thru the pre-trip and Harold (our instructor) gave us a pretty thorough and simple way of doing it and remmebering all the items. Coupling and uncoupling was next. Then after lunch our group did straight-line back while the other group did lap in the yard. The other group is going on a road trip to Trenton, OH while my group stays in the yard. I will tell you all something, all the drivers I see and talk to are all great guys, very helpful and all say the same thing: They Love Driving for Millis. I havent heard a complaint yet and all are happy. The more I talk with the other drivers the more confident I am that I chose the right company. I think Baritone said the same thing. Over and out.

I did and still do. I have not met a single person yet that is not happy they work for Millis. Trust they are not all singing "dippity do ya" out their ##### - but they offer many horror stories of other companies they worked for and they are right in line with what you read here.

I know I made the right choice and loving it so far!

Baritone and Tacodog, I am following your posts with great interest. I am attending MTI starting 6/28 in Richfield. I have ALWAYS wanted to drive a truck but allowed others to talk me out of it. Well, no more! From all I've read and the research I have done previously, I feel very fortunate to have an opportunity to learn from and work for Millis. Looking forward to keeping up on how things progress for both of you. I am little longer in the tooth than most (forty-eight) and have zero experience since I have been in the corporate world all these years, but don't feel I am going into this not knowing what to expect. I am ready to drive and realize there are drawbacks to any job. Just looking forward to getting paid for something I truly enjoy doing - being on the road, listening to talk and local radio, and racking up those miles. Please keep posting on your experience!

Hey Ironman - I know this is TD's thread so I dont want to hijack it but, I am right there with you. I am 47 and was in the corporate world for 20+ years. I have been treated with respect during the whole process and have met some really great people along the way.

Just remember - forget all you think you know and listen carefully, learn "their way" and you'll be fine. Enjoy the ride - trust me, not having employees to deal with, senior managers screaming at me for peformance and demanding clients has been a blessing!

    Good Luck!

Ironman I too am 48 and Baritone is right. Even though I have only one week under my belt I have met some really great andfun people to be around. The guys in the class are alot of fun. After being a real estate broker 12 years and working in retail the last 3, this is a welcome change. I have done this before with Roehl but this time around seems so much nicer. You will get a kick out of Harold the instructor here in Richfield.

I sent my application to Millis last night, after reading this. I want to get back into driving after being out for 10 years, and I think Millis is who I want to work for.
