You know what though? To land most good jobs you gotta spend a few years in school, working jobs unrelated to your field to put your way though, and pay a boat load of money. To drive a semi, you go to school for a few weeks or months, or whatever you sign on for. Then you start as a rookie usually at a ###### company, making peanuts but still usually more then you would flipping burgers. If you wash out, your out $3000 bucks or so for school. Big deal. I went to school for 2 years to become an ASE Certified mechanic, paid close to $10,000 to do it. Did it for less then a year and realized I HATED it. Trucking's not that bad if you put your time in and move on from the starter companies.
Everyone's met the guy who's been at Werner or CRE for years and absolutely loves it. My opinion if you've got a head on your shoulders, that guy scares the hell outta you. Trust me there's more to trucking then that guy. It took me awhile to find it but when you do it's not a bad life.

Nice job highwaytrucker. You did the right thing.
Your health will appreciate it also.
The better (best) driving jobs are drying up.
Most will never see one of these type jobs.
    Just forget it, I'm serious.
The rubbishing around for chicken scratch is truly ignorant even if you are a commercial tourist/hobby trucker with a military pension.
    .23 -.35 per mile is a joke.
Holy Moly, they paid that 15-20 years ago!!!!
There is no reasonable excuse for this job to be a lagger in the pay dept. for what's invovled.

Had a swollen knee and did an ultrasound awhile back.
Lady was making $32.00/hr (for all hours worked).
That my friend is not rocket science either.
    Computer does most of it.
She puts a gel on the skin so the scanner rolls smoothly, computer does the rest.
Oh, she only works 4 days a week.
Home every night. Knows her family.

Why people are happy to be on a job 24/7, 24/5 or whatever for $10-12/ hr (good company) is beyond me.
And drivers pulling for carriers paying much less is strictly insanity.

If you feel that way then you should not do it. There's enough complainers and whiners out here already that us drivers that love it have to deal with.

Well I understand that this field isn't for everybody. Heck I'm a Janitor at my current job. Easy work and I actually enjoy it. Though the next guy in line would probably hate it since it's not the type of work that suits him. Then there's the pay....another story in itself. As for me I'm not a school guy. When I was going through school as a kid I did very well. That is as long as the teacher could hold my attention and make me interested in what's being taught. If not my mind would start to wander off and before you know I'm ditching class grades start slipping and I end up flunking. And the last thing I want to do is go to school for 1-3 years or how ever long it may be and find myself unable to concentrate and flunk out of school and stuck having to pay back some student loan for x amount of years.

I've done my research and for the last couple years this has been a idea brewing in my mind. I understand that this isn't a easy field to be in, it's not a paid vacation. But I do very well working alone since I'm sort of a natrual born loner. I have a adventures spirit and I like being able to drive on the open road. And with the price of living always going up while my wages stay the same and being I'm still a young guy at 30 with no wife or kids this seems like the best thing I can do at this point in my life.

Anyway I'm off to bed. First day of trucking school starts at 7am tomorrow morning!

    Got that right, "outerspacehillbilly!"

Some of these posters would be better off finding a "Whiner's Forum" instead of a "Trucker's Forum"---"10-FO'?"

Thx 2 U 4 Your XLNT Observation!!! "Drive On, Hand!!!" :biggrin_25514:

There are still some good driving jobs out there but you usually won't find them advertise. I know drivers who make 80k plus a year, home every night or day, and home on the weekends. Then again, most of them jobs require a few years of "paying your dues" before you land a run that suits you.

Good idea on not going into trucking though.
