I am a new "fresh out of truck driving school" driver from Rosemount, Minnesota. Despite a good work history and clean driving record I have been having problems finding a job (mostly because of my lack of experience). At the present time my job choices are down to R&L Carriers and Werner Trucking. I hope to find some good advice in this forum about the trucking industry, and to hopefully get a few questions answered about some things that I didn't learn in school. I thank you in advance for your help.

I know that there a few local carriers around Rosemount. You might try them, maybe get on with a O\O who can teach you the way of things.
Bay and Bay has a terminal there just south of the refinery on 52.
Several other co.'s have drop yards up in Fridley, among them is Magnum Logistics out of Fargo, ND. They do accept students, as far as I know.
Don't be afraid to call on some of the construction companies down around you as well. To get in, you may not get a truck immediately, but may have to do some grunt work and earn a seat in a truck.
I'm betting you went to Dakota Tech., if so call on the campus career counselor, that is what they are there for.
Best of Luck. -
Camaron, try Magnum out of Fargo. I currently drive for them and they are a good company to drive for, especially since you live here in the cities. Another good bet would be Roehl out of WI. Stay away from Werner, I started there when I graduated form CDL school. Only stayed a month. Try applying at TMC out of Des Moines and maybe Marten too in WI. Good luck.

As far as R&L Carriers goes, I worked for them as a dock worker years ago. If you're looking to be home every night, I'd say go for it. I honestly thought they were a great company to work for.

Yes, I did go to Dakota County Technical College. I took the night class because I felt that they would teach me what I needed to know. As far as job posibilities I was just given a copied sheet of business cards of businesses that use to recruit at DCTC. With the new regulations a lot of companies don't do that anymore. Bay and Bay and Roehl wouldn't hire me straight out of school. I applied at Magnum and Marten but never heard back from them. I tried applying to some of the concrete businesses around here, but none would hire me because of my lack of experience. If I don't get the job at R&L then I will go with Werner, but I will keep applying to as many trucking companies as I can. I guessed that Werner sucked right off the bat, but they will give me the one thing that I need-experience.

I wonder why, but Roehl will only hire their own students right out of school, weird but thats something they told me.

Cameron, how would you rate the class at Dakota county tech. Is that all the help they gave you with placement was a copied list of business cards? I was under the impression that at least a few companies recruited directly from the school. If the placement is that poor I'm thinking I should pass on it and go somewhere else.

Not sure what to tell you about Roehl, maybe they changed their ways. Back when I was entering the industry a year and a half ago, the recruiter from Roehl came to our school and they were hiring straight out of school, in fact I had a pre-hire from them. As far as I know, actual recruiters are still visiting the school where I went. Check out Interstate Driving School in South St. Paul. I give them two thumbs up. Also, they have recruiter nights and they are open to prospective students as well. A good chance to go listen and get a pre-hire before you shell out tuition money.
almostthere Thanks this. -
Hey thanks Adam, that's really good advice. I'll check it out.
