I know I'm not the only fat trucker out here so this might help someone.

Six weeks ago I decided to apply for Social Security Disability benefits due to my obesity.
First I went to a lawyer who specializes in this and she didn't know if I would qualify are not but she recommended that I try. This was in April.I never really thought about getting it and knew it would be a long process.

However I was called this week and was informed that I was approved. My first check will be for 9300.00 of which my lawyer will get 25% and my monthly benefit is for 1600.00 per month.
I figured there will be a run on the system after CSA2010 so I gave it a shot and I'm glad I did.

Just curious, what are the standards?
    I'm 6'4" weigh about 315 (down from 350).
According the their figures, I have a 44 BMI.

All I know is I weigh between 400 and 425 I haven't weighed in awhile but I never was sent to a Dr.or anything other than applying for it and having a friend send in a written form that they sent him.

I think the main thing I had going for me was how long I have been in this business and was being forced out.Because they asked a lot of questions about years of service.

Just a word of caution, and nothing personal implied.

Be careful when collecting disability, be mindful of what you do and say......

'nuff said, like I said nothing personal, just free info for others that may file.

Wow, is this all because of the BMI crap they're starting?

I've never heard of anyone doing this before.

Anyway, good job on that. I've known quite a few people who have been disabled, and I've seen people barely walk in with oxygen tanks, barely able to breathe, and get denied and have to fight for years for it....

Removed by moderatror You made your self that way but now I (the tax payer) have to pay for it. I get to pay for you to sit on the coach and eat donuts and get fatter. What B/S. I think they should have a mandatory rule. You get six month's, after that unless you have a medical reason why you can't lose the weight YOU put on your done. You also can not use any of the money to go to fast food places or but any food like ice cream, donuts, cookies or any other un-healthy food. "Well how are you going to stop me"? Same way people on food stamps are stopped from buying beer. There's no check. You get a card and it's put on it. When you scan it it refuse any un-healthy food and will not work at fast food places.

Getting paid for being fat, I just can't believe it.

The fact that you got the disability is a statement on the sad shape of the country.

There are people on this forum that draw disability and could actually work for living.

Just because you are excess BMI and cannot work for the living as a trucker does not mean you could not work at McDonalds.

I guess since I am over BMI a little, I should contact an attorney and go on disability as well.:biggrin_25510:

I don't know how many times here in Oklahoma i see a person put beer and cigs and candy on the counter and pays with a Access card.Clerk just rings it up as groceries.
I look at BigRigger like this,he put in 35 years as a driver,at least 35 years of payin into taxes and fica and whatever else....thats alot better than alot of the people i see around here that draw a SSI check and have never worked a day in their life and will never work a day.i see people that say they have anger issues, mental issues that can't work and draw a check monthly.....but then i go to area offices and there is a person with Downs Syndrome cleaning and emptyin the trash to earn a check.the system is very, very flawed......at least bigRigger put in 35 years.

I worked 35 years and would continued had the rules stayed the same.During the 70's,80's&90's I would pay as much as a thousand dollars per week in taxes deducted from payroll checks and I never slammed anyone who benefitted from those deductions with me.

My reason for posting was to announce the possibilities because I never expected anything when I applied.

Can you truly not do any type of work?

Otherwise it is no different from the fact that I have worked over 37 years and continue to do something no matter what it takes.

But still, it does show a possible situation for the many of the BMI challenged.
