I am a product of the WV education system and it was a good system in some counties until the Feds took over education in the '80s (implementation of Dept of Ed in 1979, but no effects countrywide until the '80s. Thank you, Jimmy Carter, NOT!). I didn't take offense to your statement, Tarps, so please don't think I am bloviating from that direction. I recently went back to school (university) and found I recalled more in most all subject matters than most coming from high school today. Even degree specific subjects are taught by theory and I had self-educated sufficiently that I realized the information provided in class was not beneficial to practical application. I would be in agreement that most all education systems are left wanting since many decisions have been taken out of the local school board's hands. I am so very glad that I had the advantage of my education verses what is being provided today. My experience in the university system is now one of only being taught theory by tenured professors that could care less if their students learned anything. That is why I am dropping out to go this route. Well, not the only reason, but a major factor. The university system as it is set up today is similar to most all other business entities - as long as they are getting their tuition, they are complacent on the services provided. I realize that is an extremely generalized statement. Maybe I need to correct that by saying my experience with the higher level schools in my area fit this mold.

I've been looking to get into driving for awhile, and I'm glad this forum is here to satisfy any curiosity I have about the industry. Being only 24 and single, I feel this occupation is an ideal fit for me and my lifestyle. I need a change bad. I used to be a college student, but I was forced to choose between full time schooling or full time employment. Without any financial support from family, I tried to do both at the same time, and of course it didn't work out. I worked as fast food manager since I was 16 and throughout my few college years, and while I do realize it's not the most desirable of jobs, it got me by. Well, I was fired from that job for a really stupid reason, and started driving a school bus in the interim, which I've been doing the last 2 years. While it's far from a full time job, it is money that supplements my unemployment benefits and it's an enjoyable job for the most part. Being summer time of course I will not be working much and I really want to stop living off the government, so that's what brings me here today. So after many hours of research, I've decided to go with Roehl Transport for my CDL A training and start my trucking career with them. It's great that I only have to drive 2 1/2 hours to attend their school, and the closest terminal is about a 15 min drive for me. I'm just waiting on my credit to be approved and then the process will be started. I hope I made the right choice and any advice would be appreciated.

I read this earlier this morning and sort of let it digest. I wonder if a lot of people feel this way? If a person has a great job they may not want to shout it from the mountain top.

Your wonder is human nature, and everyone's tendency to 'protect mine'. It seems to me if the company one works for is actually great, it shouldn't be a concern because those companies won't be looking short term to cut their current drivers' throats.

Not yet brother. Our lives (also wife) are on hold for a while. Father-in-law had a fall from top of his car hauler and has been comatose because of a closed head injury. The outlaws have been self employed their whole life and didn't pay into SS half their life and always had minimal health insurance, no long term care insurance at all. We moved them in our house when the nursing care coverage ran out. If we didn't they would lose every thing, home care and nursing homes are ridiculously expensive if you are private pay. Wife is a nurse and daddy's girl, I could work in that field now after two months of 7 days a week "rotating shifts taking care of him with wife or mother-in-law around my McJob. Medicare provides a hospital bed, tube feed and medicine bags and equipment. Neurologists tell us he is brain dead and systems will eventually shut down, but say he could last anywhere from a month to a year. They say there is no hope but they said he couldn't survive without a ventilator, after he was taken off ventilator he just keeps on keepin' on.

So I really don't know exactly when I'll get out there. Sorry for such a long answer.

    Stay Safe Brother
