Hey guys I had a quick question for yall. I am looking into purchasing a firestik antenna for my truck and was wondering if you can use any ordinary coax cable to connect it to the radio. It says on the package that you have to use a fire flex coax. I dont know if firestik is just trying to make more money by having you buy their own brand of coax or what. Thanks for the help.

They're trying to sell their coax.

Yes I normally use the coax in the truck from the factory, unless there is a actual problem with the OEM coax. Is there better coax, yes I prefer double shielded RG142u or RG214u.

There is alot of misunderstandings of the factory ran coax, or instance the problem in freightliners is normally a small barrel connect they use and dont get it tight so it comes apart with vibration, most cb shops will replace it because, well they make more money instead of simply screwing it back together.

On my last set of firesticks I ended up cutting about 22 inches off the windings to get a low (1.2 to 1 on a Bird meter, 25 to 30 Mhz - 25 watt slug) match. Don't know what they were tuned for but it was not 11 meters.

Spend the 70 dollars and get a good Wilson2500, run your own 18 foot coax and make sure there are no kinks. I never believed the hype about the Wilson, but after pumping up the ol' 29 and getting an Astatic mic, which I've always ran, I decided to finish it up with a Wilson2500 and the 18 foot coax, the differences were like night and day. Granted you will get a lot of chatter, the antenna receives like nothing I've had before, but if you're looking for a performance upgrade from your radio spend the extra money and get the good stuff, you won't be disappointed.
