After my local lumber company job dropped out after 6 months (Laid-Off), I am once again returning to the road. I am currently applying to a number of companies.
After experiencing the Knight Transportation, "Die before you dare idle crap". I am trying to stick to companys who wont threaten to fire you every time they leave you stranded for days in 100 degree weather. I know every company has good driver and bad driver experiences. I refuse to to put my cdl on the line for a load, and always do my best to stay within the law.
So, what I am looking for is companies without aggressive anti idling rules. APU's are a bonus.
Companies who do not push you to quit or run illegal. Been there, done that. Was at this flatbed company for 25 days.
A company who takes equipment maintenance seriously. CFI, once tried to make me run with windshield wipers tied down with rope, thru mid west storms.
I will not lease, so if a company has to dead head me to loads, that is fine. CFI use to be really good about this.
My current prospects are:
TransAm
FFE
PTL
SRE
LinkAmerica
I'm looking for information on equipment, Idling rules/APUs, willingness to put you where the loads are, ect.
I have searched this forum and others, and found good and bad information. I just want to hear some current up to date info as well.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
On the road again

You'll enjoy any of those fine outfits !!!!!

I would really put TA on the bottom of the list. That is NOT a lease. It's actually a rental and TA is the lessor and lessee! Ask OOIDA! Or TRY to get a copy of the lease to let your lawyer read. Just don't hold your breath. Then go and read a little bit more on the rest. They all sound like I'd want to run far away!
-
Have heard nothing good about PTL recently. Split mileage pay on either side of the Mississippi river is crap, too.
I'd take CFI over any of the others. As you stated, every company has its share of idjits either in dispatching or safety and/or maintanence that make stupid requests of drivers.
Good luck to you! -
thats a list not to drive for.

Just pick the best liar of the pack!

Honestly it is getting so that there really isn't a good one to work for. Most don't want to pay anything. Just need to find one that has stuff in your area and what you want to do. I would check into ones with dedicated stuff. That usually ends up being the best jobs anyways instead of random freight.
Done the lumber hauling around town thing. Doesn't last long or pay that well! -
You might want to tell us the general area you live so we may be able to point out other opportunities. I don't think any of these companies are probably that great.

I was pretty happy with J&R Schugel. Apu's. Well maintened newer internationals. How you run depends on your dispatcher. Pretty much like any other company there.

I live in northern Missouri. About 90 miles north of I-70.

Seems every company has these horror stories. And every company has the love stories as well. I think I have to atleast take PTL and FFE off the list. I am adding J&R Schugel to the list. And Celadon as well.
I really hope to find a company I can fit into. I run the miles, go where I am dispatched and deliver on time when it is possible. Seems like I did a lot of favors at Knight, and I didn't mind that. But I am not going to be stuck at a company where I am not allowed to be healthy and comfortable. Being able to cook and store food in a truck probably saves you close to $100 a week.
If anyone else can recommend any other companies I should look at, I would be very greatful.
