My First year with Prime

I just want to know about being a company driver. I have already done the have your own truck thing and the drive for yourself thing also. I don't want the headache of all that again. I love driving and have been to all lower 48 and most of Canada I just don't want my own truck.

 

Little Trucker, My question exactly, I would like to know how much they push you to get your own truck? I am interested in seeing this, I think I would like Prime but we will see. Thanks. TD.

 

There are over two years of postings from Ironpony and myself on the topic of being a Prime Company driver.

Not much has changed except we are a bit busier this year.

 

I thought we did pretty well the last couple of years, myself. And yup, real busy.

Forty plus years ago I lived in England while going to the University of London. Back then the exchange rate was approximately $2.50 per GBP. A London flat that sells today for $1 million, back then could be had for $50-70K.

 

When I started I was adamant that I would be a company driver and not lease a truck. The lease was never at any point pushed on me. Thru my training I learned how the lease worked, ran company for the winter after I was done training, and that spring they were separating out all the lease drivers and company drivers to specific dispatchers. I was given an option in 2/07 that I could lease, or I'd have to be moved to a company dispatch board. I asked if I could hold off till April and lease and stay on my current board, and was told no problem. I leased 4/19/07 and have never looked back.

 

I was set on going Company when I came here, but then I started to see alot of signs of business picking up while I was in training. I did alot of talking with some lease guys who were making more than I needed on a bad week... and I decided to go lease, right out of training.

It has been great so far... I have been a solo Lease Op almost two months now, and I haven't had a week yet that wasn't what I would consider great.

You are right about running instead of sitting also... I never turn down a load. Also, if you are willing to run hard, maximizing your HOS by being as efficient as possible, you can make a great settlement week in and week out.

Prime didn't push me to go lease at all. My trainer (who, by the way, is a good friend now) was the only one at Prime who suggested I go lease... said I would make way better money that way. He was right.

 

Never sign a "Rent A Truck" contract. The game is rigged.
