cooking in the truck

I did not read all the posts but I will share some of the things I did. I had a small camp stove for a while that long distance hikers use it worked really well for small things. My favorite was the small George foreman grill I had they even come with cooking instructions it amazing what you can whip up. also liked the crock-pot this worked well but make sure you have it secure and with a bungee cord or something over the lid. put a towel under the bungee so it dont get to hot from the lid.Cant cook things that have much liquid in it when driven or you will have a mess. You can cook just about anything in them. stop at a bookstore and look threw a slow cooker book you will be surprised!! If you get home you can always make up a big batch of burritos or something and freeze them. They will last a week after being froze and are healthier then the store bought ones that are loaded with additives. Most fruit and fresh veggies will last close to a week if not longer in the truck. Meat if frozen when you hit the road will last much longer also I use to put all my frozen stuff in one small cooler so it lasted longer.

I used the Coleman "Powerchill" cooler that is pointed out in the OP. Also had a 600w microwave and an electric "sauce" pan that could heat water to a boil. The cooler is suposed to keep things 40 degrees cooler than the surounding temp. So if your in a cold area w/ your truck turned off, stuff will freeze. But normal operation stuff wont stay frozen. I kept baby carrots and bananas to snack on. Ate alot of ham samwichs and "cup o noodles". On payday I would find a nice sit down truck stop diner and eat my fill of chicken fried steak and eggs lol.

for a refridg go with the Avanti 1.7 cu.ft. #shp1712sdc 12v/110v fridg, sorry to say but it,s way better Then the coleman unit. you can get them on the net for under $200.00 WITH SHIPPING. I saw one last week at the Pilot exit #78 in Parowan,Utah for $219.00. I picked up a 12v hot water pot that worked great for tea,coffee! A laptop is a must also a GPS, Satlelite radio is great also. we eat in truck most of the time and eat out for dinner or lunch which ever is best at the time. showers are about every three to four days, which is a bummer. but it's tolerable. Oh and don't forget the EARPLUGS! there a must! I eat lots of jerky,apples,oranges,almonds,bannas,V8 juce with hot sauce, Lots of WATER, and for the the Morning I buy 4 pack of Starbuckd double shots when I can't heat water for coffee. Life on the road is fun so far.

Why do you have to go 3 or 4 days for a shower???

Bet it's kinda ripe in that trk. and please do not stand near me in the pay line

 

Even if I'm stuck in the woods somewhere, I'll clean up with bottled water... 3-4 days without a shower sounds ugly. I'm with "passingthru" on this one, I'd have to wait in a different line...

 

Going 3-4 days without a shower would be kinda tough for me. As far as an actual "Shower" at the truck stop goes, you can do a few days without one if you prep for it. I liked having "Wet Ones" BIG Ones. These are wet ones wipes, but are about the size of a wash cloth. A soldier friend who used them in Iraq, turned me onto them. They work great. A few of these can help keep you clean between shower times. I also kept a pack of them up front near the drivers seat for cleaning dirt or grease off of hands and wiping a sweaty face.

A few times on the road, when I was extremely busy and couldn't stop for a couple of days, I took a truck bath. I had a large salad bowl, some bottled water and Dr. Bonners Peppermint Soap. Great stuff. I'd lay a large towel on the floor, and with a wash cloth and soap and water, I could scrup down from head to toe and towel off. I was clean even though I couldn't get a shower. I could also use the water to shave, then take a another bottle of water and brush my teeth.

A quick word about Dr. Bonner's Peppermint Soap. This stuff is mild, but gets you clean and smelling fresh again. A few squirts in a bowl of water, and a washcloth can get you to feeling like a new man. It's bio-degradeable so throwing the bath water out in the grass does no harm. It's a truckers, friend in my book.

 

In the wonderful world of DM's, shippers, receivers, etc. It is often the norm for drivers to have to go 2-3-even 4 days, without a "proper" shower.

I HATE this, with a passion....HOWEVER, it happens, more often than some will admit.

To combat this, we keep a supply of baby wipes, water in a spray bottle, a small "tub" (such as for a small kitchen sink), bar soap,two GOOD towels,and, believe it or not, CORN STARCH.

In slightly oily hair, you work the corn starch into your hair, then THOROUGHLY brush out.

I'm with a My Driver Trainer right now and that's how he does it. I have three weeks left to go. Then I'll have my own truck. Then there will be showers every day! I can't stand not having a shower and trying to force the trainer I feel would be a bad thing. Training lasts for 6 weeks so I can make it. Three more weeks left and I'm free of my driver trainer. Woo Ho. I was thinking baby powder for shoe stink.. Baby wipes for sure! I like the corn starch idea I'll have to give it a try.

I hate to burst your bubble, but if you think that an OTR driver can get a shower every day....well, more often than not, you will be LUCKY to find time for personal business every OTHER day.

That's not to say that that you won't have time for brushing your teeth,combing your hair, making yourself presentable, and "stall business" daily.

Just that, a shower a day is realistically not gonna happen.
