Who is the best to use for broadband for laptops on the road now? I had Sprint and got rid of it after I stopped driving, now maybe going back on the road and noticed all of them are capped at 5 gig now.

AT&T by a very clear margin. I use mine nationwide and very seldom can I not get a decent 2G connection.
In better populated area's I easily get the full 3G Service.
5Gig for $60 per month is alot of air time,no place for downloading a bunch
of media like movies and songs. But it a considerable bit of surfing can be done daily for extended periods. -
I've had Verizon for a year and a half and it's AWESOME. Very few times I've ever not had a signal.

$500 a gigabyte for overage charges...AT&T is insane. AT&T is the worst one, especially when it comes to enforcing the 5 gig cap.
There are a lot of options...AT&T is the worst.
If you don't do a lot of driving in the western mountain states, and you want a cheap plan with a SOFT cap, no overage charges, T-mobile can be had for just $40 a month. When you go over the 5 gigs, they MAY throttle you down for the remainder of the month. The only down side is that coverage is spotty when you get out in middle of the square-shaped states out west.
Millenicom has a $59.99 10 gig capped plan and a $69.99 UNLIMITED plan that is 3g just about everywhere, because they use Verizon's network. -
I have friends who dropped that and returned to AT&T,the AT&T coverage and reliability is second to none.Scalping off of motels and assorted WiFi
when you can helps with the usage.
If your out here and "running" and not laid up 4/7 days a week you couldn't possibly use 5Gig per month.

We use Sprint and manage to go over our 5 gig limit every month and have never gotten fined or even turned down after going over. We have had great luck with the signal as well though we are only on a limited area, I don't run 48 states.

I used my blackberry as a modem and teather it to the laptop. No contracts or expensive monthly fees. It's fast enough for most applications.
-
Well if you are happy paying $60 a month for 2G five out of seven nights, more power to you.
I know one person who dropped their AT&T card and never looked back...ME! -
MrMustard mentioned Millenicom. Their 10 Gig for $59.99 a month uses the Verizon network. The unlimited plan for $69.99 a month uses The Sprint network. There is no contract on either. They are currently out of the device needed for the unlimited plan so that plan doesn't show up on their web site but will as soon as they receive the reception devices.

With all due respect Tater, but AT&T doesn't have nearly the 3G coverage Verizon does. Haven't you seen the commercial where the Verizon guy checks his 3G coverage during the football game and the guys all yell at him because the coverage map covers the TV, then the AT&T guy checks his coverage map and then ask the guys if he is blocking the TV, and the guys say, "no, you're all right?"
If you want 3G fast service get Verizon. If you don't mind slow service, get AT&T. They both charge $60 for 5gs.
