Just received my cummins manual and indeed 30-40 PSI is normal. Idle could see 20 +/-.
Scared me is right. I was ready to park it and call the tow truck.
I've got about 5000 miles on it now and all is well. I am getting way better millage then my 'aero' truck with CAT ACERT ever did. Might just be me and/or the way I drive...
Learning a new/different truck takes a bit of time.
thanks.

My ISX is the same... with a fresh oil change I only get 40 PSI at startup cold... it'll settle around 30-35 running down the road.. and 20 PSI at low idle when hot...
I've had my ISX going on 8 years. It's been great. During that time I have put 600k on the motor with few problems! It has made a beliver out of me. Just usual wear and tear stuff..
Replaced water pump at like 700k
Replaced oil cooler # 750k
Now I'm in the process of rebuilding the Jakes # 803k
I swear by fleetguard filters & have always used delo oil w/ 12-15k oil changes. My motor says to adj. the overhead every 100k.. I always get that done 1x a year..
What scared me was the first time I was realy pulling a hill and downshifted fast.. the turbo "farted"... I didn't know what the heck just happened! But, it has always done it but never caused any problems.. It used oil like crazy when I got it and since I have owned it that hasn't changed. I just got used to it.. (oil drips out of blowby pipe & has done it since it had 200k on motor.. During whole life of motor so far about every 3000 mi. I have to dump a gal. in!! <I freaked out # Cummins but they said it was NO problem!!
So besides a few quirks I think it's a GREAT engine IF you take care of it it'll take care of you!dmg1029 Thanks this. -
If you don't mind me asking, what year ISX is it? I have not seen any oil usage so far (after 5000 miles or so)
So far, I really like it. I'm getting much more used to the power and torque range too. -
My ISX is a 2001.. before all the EGR stuff... (the serial # info plate says it was built in 2000).
There were some upgrades / recalls but somehow I didn't hear about them till after the deadline..
For instance there was 1 that called for putting in an electric fuel pump.. I missed that one.. They refused to pro rate the instal so I just never got the thing done.. It hasn't effected me at all by not having it.. -
My '05 build EGR equipped (sigh) ISX has the same oil pressure numbers as Gonzo's. If you are used to another engine with higher pressures, then it can make you real nervous. Cummins engines have traditionally had lower oil pressures.
It is not an issue. My oil samples show very low wear numbers with 570,000 miles on the engine. My wear numbers are as good or better than newer engines. -
Here is my gauge ... normally I'm at 40psi running and 20 at idle...
Theres alot to relearn with these new motors... the exhaust us forced back into the motor so do all you can to clean your motor. Flush it every oil change if need be. I've seen alot of owner ops getting new rebuilds at 300k and sometimes less.. it's insane but the soot builds up and takes out the crank and everything on the top end... it just cakes up and pretty soon cant fit no more soot and stuff goes bad...
Check out Pittsburgh power they hot great products to help get that stuff out...
Theres a dorthy kit that attaches to egr so before exhaust is forced into motor it twists it like a turbo and knocks out some of the particles and over time helps alot...
Theres also an after market oil bypass filtration system that takes and puts in better filters to your existing ones and adds one gives you cleaner oil in long run. This system isnt as much as u think and will save u thousands. You filter the oil correctly and you dont have to change your oil but maybe 50,60,70 heck some guys getting 100k out of it...
Other things to... on the cheaper immediate side u can start buying a fuel catalyst that they sell and it will clean out stuff and boost your mpg and help keep dpf clean which will help keep you from using alot of def ... just some thoughts and research I've found for my truck also. I spent 80 thousand on her and I dont plan on ####in it up over not doing best I can....
Ps slot of these trucks running the full system are seeing 11mpg which if your getting 7 now and started getting 11 is a fuel savings of over 5,000 a year... so basically the first year pays for it... that's if u only run 100k a year
Good luck -
2005 9400i isx cummins here, at idle once I stop driving psi would be anywhere from 11 to 13, after 15 minutes it goes up to 15/16. Im at 865k miles on it, does need an overhead though.
