Tuckster: You are right. Some have payed over $20,000. But what was included in the price? Some overhauls are rings, bearings and gaskets. Some include everything, cyl packs, head, injectors, water pump, oil pump, turbo(s), gaskets... Is the overhaul using OEM parts or aftermarket? Somewhere on this forum it was stated that if you want to rebuild it again in 250k to 350k than use the aftermarket. If you want it to last as long as the first time, use OEM. This is where you get what you pay for and who you pay for.
But to answer your question, I've seen as little as $7000 to as high as $26,000. It all depends on:
What engine is it?
What has been done to the engine prior?
What is being replaced?
Who is rebuilding it? Cat trained or not.
and
Where you are having it rebuilt? Some parts of the country are higher (labor wise) than others.
Last,
Look at the warranty. Is it taillight warranty or is it going to be covered anywhere from coast to coast? How about how long? Can you purchase extra insurance? The new Cat programs are giving away up to 3 year, unlimited miles as part of a "proper" overhaul.

This all goes for any engine manufactor, an overhaul is what you want it to be.
