what is the ideal and max engine oil temp. The oil temp in my '00 9400 with a N14 will run around 190 in the summer when empty, but with a load on it will climb to around 200-210 pretty easy. If I run the fan I can keep it down to around 195, but I get tired of listening to the fan howl. The motor has 985,000 on it and I know I'm getting some blowby into the crankcase, so that's part of the problem. Oh, and I'm running Archer 15w40 dino oil if that matters.

Sounds to me like you are looking at your WATER temp gauge, not your oil temp.

no, it's the engine oil temp . I have noticed that if I keep the water temp around 180-185 then the engine oil doesn't heat up. If the water temp stays above 185 for a long period the engine oil slowly starts heating up.

I have an EGR ISX and my oil temp is around 200 to 210 all the time, and I am seldom over 70K gross. If you are running the engine fan to reduce the oil temp, you are wasting fuel!

    gunner76 and lilillill Thank this.

oil temps need to be at leadt 170 ish to burn off the contaminates

unburnt fuel turns acidic in the oil

    shatteredsquare and gunner76 Thank this.

Same here... loaded mine runs about 200-205'ish

The oil needs to be hot enough to evaporate any water, but yet not so hot as to cook the oil. Synthetics are able to withstand a higher temp before they start "caramelize". 210 is probably a safe upper limit for dino oil.

    gunner76 Thanks this.

guess CAT has got the game messed up since all the 3406E and c15s I ever had run 150-160 when on flat and 190-200 on a very hot day in a long hard pull.

BUt yes n14s run high oil temps, my old mans would run 220-230 in the mountains, got as high as 255 and shut motor down. They have a thermostat in the oil cooler housing and guess his went bad, water would he 170 and oil sill 220+

Back in the horse & buggy days we weren't to concerned with engine oil temps on Cummings and Detroit powered trucks.
Cat powered trucks equipped with a brakesaver usually had an engine oil temp redline at 240 degrees as I recall.
