I didn't have to see the commercial. Within 2 months of getting it, I would find no service.
My phone would have service, but the air card did not. I got rid of it within 9 months of getting it. I did not pay the early termination fee either.

I believe pretty soon air card modems will go the way of the dinosaur. Modern smart phones use about as much bandwidth as surfing with a laptop. The 2.2 android OS has a mobile wifi hot spot built into the phone. Why pay for another line when you can just use your phone to tether the laptop wirelesly. I believe as the technology advances the 5G limits will begin to disappear as well.

The problem with that is the phone carriers do NOT want you to tether. They do everything in their power to discourage you. I think they want the extra revenue generated by people paying for two devices. To AT&T's credit, with the exception of the iPhone, they are the most tether friendly carrier out there. You can add the 5 gig plan to your phone any time you want and tether with 90% of their phones. Sprint, no dice. You have to get a separate device.

My understanding is that with Sprints new EVO phone you pay 30 bux a month and can use it as a mobile hot spot. Not sure if there is a cap on the amount of data. -
same with verizon, $30 a month extra with unlimited calling is around $120/ month

Even with the iPhone all you have to do is jailbreak it (cake) and then you can tether to your heart's content. If you're not planning on trying to do a bunch of downloading with it it's not like they'll see anything abnormal with your bandwidth usage. You can also pay an additional $20 to tether with your iPhone if you want.

Not with AT&T's permission you can't. They are rumored to come out with an iPhone tethering plan, but so far nothing. Like I said in an earlier post, AT&T is pretty liberal about tethering. If you have an AT&T phone, it's pretty easy to set it up, you can get the tethering plan for an extra $60, with no contract, and remove it from your plan with no fee, any time you want.
My mother has a Palm Pre from Sprint, and they refused to sell her a tethering plan, told her there was no tethering plan, nor would there be one any time in the future, so they sold her an aircard. The Pre can be hacked and turned into a mobile hotspot easy enough, but Mom refused to let me do it, she was afraid of Sprint finding out. I don't think that would have ever happened, she only uses around 250 megabytes a month on her 5 gig plan. She does her online banking, pays her bills, that's about it. -
No, they do indeed have a tethering plan - you have to have the 2GB data plan and then you can pay an extra $20 to allow tethering.

And there's really nothing they can do to prevent you from jailbreaking your phone and tethering via that route. If you used it ALL the time and well exceeded what you could possibly ever use on your phone they might get suspicious but otherwise it's not a problem.
