Thanks to all for your great advice. I will be doing orientation in a couple of weeks, and this thread is invaluable.
I do have a (perhaps stupid) question: since I will be training in July/August, is there any problem with substituting a couple of pair of shorts for pants? While I was in trucking school, we were forbidden to wear shorts, without any explanation other than "because I'm the Daddy and I said so." Is there some rationale (safety, common sense, trucking fashion faux pas) for not wearing shorts while driving?
    Thanks again.

I don't see a problem with wearing shorts. I suppose a company could make it part of their safety policy, but I don't see any logical reason why. I have had similar "no shorts" jobs.

Every company I have seen or worked for allows thier drivers to wear shorts...sounds like your instructor had issues. I went to Road Master and our instructors were wearing shorts.

Just have long pants anyway as there are some shippers and receivers that go by OSHA regs and that is no shorts. Especially if you do flat bed and go to union sites or hazmat loads. Some freezers you might find a tad bit nippley so shorts would not be "cool" while standing in a long line checking in! My list at # 168 can be adjusted a bit just remember if it doesnt fit you don't need it!

Thanks, Rollover, that makes sense (as much sense as gov't. regs can make).

I don't know about your area but here in the NW its been under a week, so with luck you won't have too long of a wait.

Cash. Keep it simple. trainers already have their trucks stuffed. No more than two bags. A backpack to carry shower supplies and cloths and etc. The second if needed, should be small and should carry your surplus. Map, pens, cellphone charger etc. Remember you are not staying for long. This is not your truck. Keep your stuff put away in your bags. Keep portable.
